Good piece from @thetimes.com about #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods - hopefully this will give politicians support to cut through the noise.
Also nice to see this from the paper which ran the award winning #CitiesFitForCycling campaign
No.
Oddly enough I’ve had an argument on here today about #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods consultations and how they end up dominated by people making #BadFaith opposing arguments to any change rather than constructive feedback.
Good guidance from both @ategov.bsky.social and @cyclinguk.bsky.social - too much of our walking & cycling infrastructure is hostile to women & girls, & addressing this, with safe infrastructure & restricting through traffic by e.g. #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods, makes our streets safer for everyone.
I suppose even the Greens have to learn the lesson about #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods being a crap choice of wedge issue, but if they won’t argue for them, then who will?
There is a 94% failure rate for #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods outside London.
Why is this being allowed to happen?
@walkridegm.org.uk
All the evidence is that #ActiveTravel interventions, whether #SchoolStreets, safe infrastructure or #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods have significant public health benefits.
But so often they seem to be siloed as a “Highways” measure @triciaayr.bsky.social
The thing is that they’ll happily wallow in nostalgia for the days when people knew their neighbours, local shops were viable and kids played out.
But actually doing anything to deliver these things, most of which have been seen off by too much traffic…
#LowTrafficNeighbourhoods
It’s official! Don’t mess with LTNs. Leave them be. It’s good to see the law finally sticking up for something that saves lives.

Excellent piece on #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods in Oxford.
"A survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of CoHSAT member group, Oxfordshire Liveable Streets, showed that 56% of respondents supported LTNs, while only 29% opposed them."
This isn’t exactly a shock and is true of so much including #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods but it would really help if British politicians didn’t do all their interacting with the public on Twitter.
Isn't this what the Norwegians found?
Even with pay-per-mile we still need #CongestionCharges and non-charging things to make driving less convenient like #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods
This is #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods writ large - the views of rat-running drivers are more important than those of the people actually living and voting there.
Without wanting to head off down an #ActiveTravel rabbit hole, the solution to both of those often involves less through traffic.
But seeing as #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods are a population control measure rather than an evidence based intervention that improves health and quality of life...
It is. And more cycling/walking is also better for businesses, and #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods also build communities.
But a small, shouty minority of drivers might get sad on the internet, so best not make things better for the rest of us.
Neighbourhoods where children are safe to play out are better for everyone - so why aren’t we accelerating #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods? @thewaroncars.bsky.social
We analysed 36,696 UK tweets about #CycleLanes and #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods (#LTNs) from Mar 2018–Jun 2022, using Sentiment Analysis and Structural Topic Modelling to see how opinion shifted before and after the Fund (2/)
(Should also add that if the Government is serious about preventive healthcare then it really needs to look at increasing walking and cycling, and that means more #ActiveTravel infra, making driving less attractive by e.g. #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods, and dealing with #PavementParking)
#LowTrafficNeighbourhoods reduce serious road injuries by up to 37% and the danger is not transferred to surrounding areas.
What's not to like?
Could your area benefit from #LTNs?

This is a repeated lesson from eg. #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods (and #Brexit too to be fair) - all the facts won’t win the argument unless we can also make the emotional and psychological case.
Fact: #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods reduce serious road injuries by up to 37% and the danger is not transferred to surrounding areas.

The benefits of #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods keep building, whether that’s health, air quality or (as in this) road safety.
Our politicians must have the courage to do the right thing and expand these.
I think the big worry is that, despite the evidence, a noisy minority make #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods politically ‘too difficult’; in GM many schemes were either abandoned or seriously watered down…
I think it would make a big difference if a non-London city went all in; maybe Oxford?
Might a short film that explains the core principles and ideas behind new towns be useful?

This is how it should be - #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods have a synergistic effect and help build safe #ActiveTravel networks
Yes, and one of the effects of e.g. #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods is a reduction in car ownership, which makes people more likely to use an occasional taxi.
A road narrowing just before a side road going off left. The released space is filled with planting and the street counded by offices and flats with a pub opposite.
Shepherdess Walk, junction with Micawber Street, Hackney.
This used to be a signalised junction before the junction (on both roads) was filtered with a bus exemption.
First planters, now kerbs.

In line with evidence elsewhere. We know #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods work. We just need the political will to install more of them @walkridegm.org.uk
