I came up with a challenging but #mathisfun problem for my level 2 students. I wonder how they will approach this! #mtbos #iteachmath

Plot of FEV for Smokers and Non-Smokers. Smokers appear to have a higher FEV which can be (erroneously) inferred as having "healthier" lungs.

We recently looked at the very user-friendly Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV) data set as an exercise in data slicing and visualization:

I offer infinite retakes on my quizzes, which are one-question quizzes focused on a specific skill. But creating another version of a 15-question math test? I can’t create and grade infinite versions of that. Teachers don’t get enough time to do that. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

Unfortunately, this article fails to address a major roadblock to test retakes: creating another test often takes a lot of time, especially for math, unless the problems are all routine (which they shouldn’t be). I can’t easily make up another authentic word problem from scratch. #MTBoS #ITeachMath

I am still thinking hard about the ramifications of not only saying the denominator first, but also writing it first. In Korean, one names a fraction with the denominator, then the numerator.
Surely that affects understanding?!

Another student sent an update on modeling the atmospheric CO_2 data, and was able to get the model:

a sin(b(x +c)) + d + ex +f x^2

to fit quite nicely.
