So liebe Gemeinde, ich war dann mal weg :-) 4 Wochen Auszeit auf einem anderen Kontinent und jetzt erstmal wieder in eine neue, deutsche, heimatliche aber immerhin frühlingshafte Realität zurückkehren. #manaslu #nepal #manaslucircuit

8/11/22
Earlyish start to grab a jeep down the bumpy road to Besisahar where we switched to a car for a more comfortable but still very slow trip back to KTM. As always things catch your eye as you mull a wonderful experience and promise to return for another high mountain adventure.
Another prompt start on a chilly morning
Some vegetation to begin to soften the high mountain landscape
Looking back up valley
Trees….at last
#ManasluCircuit
7/11/22
A prompt start as Dharapani is a fair old hike. And a cold one as it took time for the sun to creep over the higher mountains surrounding us. Slowly the landscape began to relent from the starkness of high altitude and some colour began to penetrate the eye and brain.
The ice lake below, headtorches behind.
Already above the snow line
Chatur moving nicely, dawn not far away
Always remember to look behind you. Stunning dawn but still chilly.
#ManasluCircuit
6/11/22
Shovelling down muesli at 04.00 in minus temps isn’t the best start to the day. But you need calories for the uphill. A quick pack of the sac and off we went to Larkye La by head torch. Cold for sure but not extreme. 4 layers on top, Icebreaker tights under mountain trousers.
The 6,000m peaks at the head of the valley. Tibet is just the other side.
More ancient carvings on the route
Samdo just beyond the moraine on the right. Chatur and Al on the bridge.
The landscape was ever widening. The gorge far behind now.
#ManasluCircuit
5/11/22
The schedule had us making the leap from Samagaon via Samdo directly to Dharamsala at the base of Larkye La, usually a 2 day effort. Sudip was more than happy with our acclimatisation but even so, we were off and out early to ensure a sensible finish time. Chilly start.
Manaslu in the morning
The lake with Manaslu behind. We’re heading right of the lake.
Still waters.
At times the path was decent, at others bushwhacking was required. Maybe we took a short cut….
#ManasluCircuit
4/11/22
The schedule said it was an acclimatisation day. A short walk then…..Sudip, taking note of our fitness, health and prior trip to 3,600m suggested a day trip to Manaslu Base Camp. So off we went, via Birendra Tal once more.
#ManasluCircuit
3/11/22
Sudip suggested we rise early and watch the sun rise over Manaslu. An 05.30 start had us a touch chilly but in position a short walk from our lodge. This and the next post show the progression of the rising sun.
Beautiful engravings
A tiny Alison with a gigantic Himalayan boulder overhead
Gateway to a very newly built lodge on the way. Tea and apple pie for elevenses.
Chatur heading for higher ground
#ManasluCircuit
2/11/22
Still following the Budhi Gandaki as we made our way from Ghap to Lho. Glimpses of the mountains were finally emerging as the gorge softened into a less fraught landscape.
Crossing back to the main Circuit route
The way dipped up and down to river level with the sun making some cool refractions
Still in gorge territory for a while yet
Like Tsum valley, there was still some gorge to navigate until the landscape widened out
#ManasluCircuit
01/11/22
It was just a short downhill from Lokpa to the bridge across the Budhi Gandaki where we rejoined the standard Circuit. Still the gorge continued to dominate the way but we suspected a less constricted landscape was not far away.
#ManasluCircuit
31/10/22
Return to Lokpa from Chokkang Paro. This of course included the second crossing of the repaired boardwalk section. Sudip was sufficiently moved to record part of this section on film, so I share it with you to give a better flavour of what was involved. Hold tight!
A chilly morning with some autumn colours
The fascinating sight of a new stupa under construction near Philim
Delightful river scenery
Yak dung drying on a house wall
#ManasluCircuit
30/10/22
Having avoided any diplomatic incident at the head of #TsumValley, it was time to retrace our steps to Chokkang. Different views of course, so no great disappointment.
Every trekker’s dream — the Manaslu Circuit! 🥾 Walking through yellow blossoms with Mount Manaslu towering behind, this adventure is a soul-stirring experience.

Looking back towards Chokkang
Timber on the move
Suddenly, broader and flatter
Beautifully coloured mani stone

29/10/22
Beyond Chokkang, the #TsumValley widens out somewhat giving a more spacious feel. We pressed on to Nile, but found no open lodges so retreated about 0.5 of a mile to Chule.
Big landslide zone not far from Lokpa
Alison heading for the boardwalk
Nepal health and safety in action. You go on or you turn back.
More landslide repair work
#ManasluCircuit
28/10/22
I recall the day from Lokpa to Chokkang Paro as a tough one. Big climbs and descents and significant altitude gain over the day. It started with the crossing of a big landslide zone and not long after we were introduced to the delights of the Himalaya boardwalk.
Down by the river
Felt like the longest suspension bridge in Gorkha province
Passing through Chisapani (literally ‘cold water’). Springs were just around the corner.
Not one on our route, but essential for those living on higher locations
#ManasluCircuit
27/10/22
We pressed on up the Budhi Gandaki gorge to the point where the Circuit crosses the river and heads for higher ground. We swung NE and headed into the quieter #TsumValley. Tibetan influences predominate from here and a real sense of peace descends, like going back in time.
Budhi Gandaki gorge scenery
Chatur with the big bags. What a star!
Mule trains were a regular challenge. Always stand on the uphill side!
Some kind of lesson being learned here.
#ManasluCircuit
26/10/22
We pressed ever deeper into the Budhi Gandaki gorge, heading for Philim via Jagat. The river was ever present and the steep gorge sides presented ‘interesting’ walking.
#ManasluCircuit
25/10/22
Started the day with a descent into the Machha Kola, then up via Singla, along and crazily steep down to join the classic circuit at Khorlabeshi. The days ahead would see us wedded to the Budhi Gandaki river and gorge, delights yet to come.
Looking to higher ground on the climb out of Barpak
Barpak dropping away almost beneath us
View with the morning tea stop

24/10/22
With Sange Sherpa otherwise engaged in Upper Mustang, Gokul Thapa had introduced us to a new guide, Sudip Risal. With Sudip came Chatur Lama, a singing, dancing human dynamo to carry the big bags. We were straight into it out of Barpak gaining height f not too steeply.
Morning inversion at Gorkha
Checkerboard rice fields
Quick leg stretch on the way to Barpak
Looking back down the road to Barpak from the village
#ManasluCircuit
24/10/22
Some research pre-trip led us to the view that the sub-tropical early walking from Arughat might cause some suffering. Choosing Barpak, at 1,800m as our starting point, with an early way point at 2,500m, would suit us better. So, on by rough jeep road to Barpak.
The road bridge at Mugling
Stupa top in Gorkha
Newari woodwork at a museum
A glimpse of the higher mountains
#ManasluCircuit
22/10/22
The first stage, as ever, was to get to the starting point of our walk. We took the right turn at Mugling that eventually takes you to Pokhara then right again as we chose to break our road journey in Gorkha which gave time for a wander around the town.
KGH at night
Curry needs beer
Nepali veg thali
Tiny stupa in the KGH gardens

21/10/22
Touching down at KTM is always a thrill as visions of the journey ahead flash through your mind. The Kathmandu Guest House eases you into the Eastern way of life. A walk around The Garden Of Dreams ensures some calm amongst the hurly-burly of Thamel. And curry of course.
Having enjoyed reliving our #ThreePasses winter walk from Nov/Dec 2023, I thought I’d post a similar brief day by day record of our October/November 2022 walk around the #ManasluCircuit and #TsumValley. Day -2 to follow later.
