A patch of green moss growing on the side of a stone fence has little sporophytes sporting green sporangia with translucent opercula at their tips. The thin sporophyte stem is reddish and fades to a translucent green, the sporangium is like a small, long green barrel, and the operculum is like a green water drop at the tip of of the sporangia. The leafy stems, called gametophytes, are very green and wet.

A very large big leaf maple grows near a neighborhood sidewalk. The trunk would require at least three or four people to ring it. Its bare branches reach up to the blue sky streaked with some clouds. You can see a few houses down the street, with some parked cars. I think this is the largest single trunk big leaf maple I have ever seen.

Male catkins are ready for business. A small cluster of yellow hazelnut catkins is in the foreground, with its flowers open and full of pollen. A bee can be seen at the bottom of one catkins, gathering pollen with vigor.
Female hazelnut flowers are open too! Here five tiny blooms are open at the base of a cluster of male catkins. You can see the tiny immature nut which forms the base of the flower, and the little bright red pistils sticking out at the top.

Every color is muted by a layer of white frost, like a thorough dusting of flour. An array of crumpled fallen leaves in shades of brown and gray twist and turn amid green leaves, moss and burgeoning California poppy plants. It almost looks monochromatic, but the sugary greens and a few pops of tan leaf colors shows it is not.

Some lichens are growing in small patches on the vertical side of a wooden fence. A couple of species of fruticose oak moss branch up from the surface, like seaweed on the ocean of air. The one at the top is possibly a powdery blue green colored Evernia, the one bottom right a olive green lungwort lichen. There are small clumps of blue green shield lichens, with overlapping "scales" making them raised from the surface. The wood of the fence is covered with green algae, working hard to help decompose the fence.
Somehow lichens growing on the side of a fence like this look alien to me. But why shouldn't they grow that way?

A small house, perched on the side of a steep paved city street, is painted purple with cream white trim. It is in the old workman square style, with a front addition, a white fence, and a garage off to the side below. The windows are nice and large. The roof is gray tile. There are Douglas firs behind it. The sky is Seattle gray. There is a very large house built on a similar sized plot off to the left. The first time I saw it I thought it was an office building, but it's one of the Colorado mine shaft styles so popular here. I am surprised at how little clearance there is between it and the older houses on each side, since it seems to be a fire hazard. Perhaps Seattle didn't learn its lesson in 1889.

A garden decoration made up of wire and colorful beads, this fish almost disappeared in the grassy stuff because it has no filler! I just noticed it because it looked at first as if someone had tossed a handful of children's bracelet beads on the ground. It is shaped a bit like a salmon, our big native fish, swimming upstream. It's fierce eye is a wire coil.
Another garden fish, this one is made of rusty iron painted verdegris green. It seems to be a vase shaped like a koi fish, swimming in the garden debris.
