156 years ago this month, the @umich.edu Regents began the process of making a landmark decision:
To allow women to study medicine along with men.
That fall, U-M became the first truly coeducational #medschool.
I trace what came after in this story:

A page from a book published in Germany in 1722 showing an anatomical theatre: lots of people lookimg how a dead human is being dissected. A human skeleton stands nearby and watches. This image is part of a "Hausväterliteratur" book, and here is the source: Francisci Philippi Florini Serenissimi ad Rhenum Comitis Palatini Principis Solisbaccensis P. in Edelsfelden & Kirmreuth, Oeconomvs Prvdens Et Legalis. An advert for "Cocarettes" depicting a woman smoking on the front of the package, and a list of reasons to smoke them on the back.
The COCARETTE was a cigarette made with coca & tobacco leaves, c.1885. The company claimed that coca was “the finest nerve tonic and exhilarator ever discovered.”

"You say you hate the swamp woman
What the hell are you on about?
Do you even know the difference
Between a swamp and an ancient bog?
In a bog you are pickled, in a swamp you would decompose
You're just jealous of her darkened skin and her dainty nose"

The Edit Feeds menu (web version) A newly pinned feed is added to the bottom of your feed list and will appear top right on the app scroll of feeds Use the ⬆️ button to move it up (or left) I personally use MUTUALS are my fist/default feed. These are the people I folow who alos follow me FOLLOWING is next, but, of course, it can be busy and I'm likely to miss a lot. QUIET POSTERS will let me find people to are not hyperactive on the app and whose posts I'd other wise miss Then come the Subject Matter feeds, like #MedHist. PhilSky etc
@drlindseyfitz.bsky.social asked for a Medical History feed.

I added all three hashtags - #medhist #histmed and #MedicalHistory
bsky.app/profile/did:...
Yeah, I'd love for you to create a #MedicalHistory feed! I think people use #histmed #medhist more - I don't know. I know so little about feeds so have never really investigated but as @bschillace.brandyschillace.com pointed out, that's probably where I'm going wrong.

A white bandage featuring sketches of how to bandage various wounds.
I love this bandage from c.1900 featuring illustrations on how to wrap wounds resulting from accidents involving a soldier, a sailor, a miner, and a woman whose clothes have caught fire. This amazing object is part of the Wellcome Collection in London.

'Tis the season!
“One Night Cough Syrup” from the 1930s, which contained cannabis, morphine, chloroform, and alcohol! In 1934, the FDA ruled that the claims of the cough syrup's therapeutic properties were misleading, and remaining stock was destroyed.
