These are the types of decorative elements which really help give a building personality, but that are all too often missing from modern architecture.

Love this decorative windowhead on an 1860s Italianate former warehouse on Hutcheson Street in central Glasgow, especially the fish-like creature in the middle.

Designed by James Thomson in a Free Style, it was originally linked by a tunnel to another warehouse owned by the same company on the south side of Ingram Street.

However, by the 1970s, when it was being used as a banana-ripening warehouse by the fruit merchant's Gilbert Walker and Co, it was a shadow of its former self and had lost its top floor and pediment.

18 Blackfriars Street in Glasgow. Originally constructed in 1790 as a Neo-Classical merchant's house, this is one of Glasgow's surprising number of surviving Georgian mansions.

The Jacobean Corsetry came much later in the building's history. Established in 1946, the Jacobean Corsetry shop occupied this site until it closed in 2000. However, it's distinctive and much loved sign remains.

This trade was controlled by Glasgow's Tobacco Lords who made their fortunes trading produce from the slave plantations of the British colonies in North America and the West Indies.

This little building on Parnie Street in Glasgow has always intrigued me. Squashed between an old church (now the Tron Theatre) and a late Victorian tenement, it has always seemed a little out of place.
