A one of a kind vintage 1950s prototype mixed metals brutalist cuff bracelet by Ben Lorenz of NYC - purchased from the artists estate.

He attended the Art Students League of New York, and after graduating he started out as a commercial designer working for such luminaries as Norman Bel Geddes and Richard Loewy. He later opened his own design studio in the Empire State Building, and his clients included Chris Craft boats, Gar Wood boats, Magic Maid appliances, Sunbeam, and Nabisco, among others. He also made art jewelry in the 1940s and 1950s, and this is an outstanding example of one of his designs from that time.

A huge vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade mixed metals sterling silver and copper modernist brutalist cocktail ring. Entirely handmade piece of wearable modernist art jewelry! Hand fabricated, not case, using copper sheet for the band, a large nugget of copper at top, and heavy sterling wire that frames the copper band, and circles around to form prongs at top to hold the copper nugget! Such a unique no doubt one of a kind creation of artist jewelry! Measures 1-3/8" by 1" wide at top, size 7 US, and weighs a substantial 17.3 grams total. Unmarked, and likely originally sold in an art gallery or fair with paperwork or labeling that has been lost over the years. Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. Excellent vintage condition.

A rugged nodular vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and malachite brutalist modernist cocktail ring. Entirely handmade hand fabricated with heavy gauge sterling silver wire and sheet that has been torch cut and textured, not cast! Interestingly, a malachite cabochon has been prong-set not bezel-set. And what prongs! Each is unique, and they resemble natural stalactites or stalagmites in a cavern! An incredible one of a kind piece of wearable modernist brutalist art jewelry! Measures 1-1/4" by 1" at top, rises 3/4" above the finger, size 6 US, and weighs a hefty 29 grams total or nearly one troy ounce. Could be sized up or down a few sizes by a professional silversmith if desired. Unmarked. Tested and guaranteed to be exactly as described. No doubt originally sold in an art gallery or fair with accompanying paperwork that has been lost over the years. In any case, it’s an extraordinary modernist cocktail ring! One corner of the stone has a natural vein of a matrix material that to the untrained eye might look like a crack, but it's completely natural and an interesting feature of this natural untreated stone. Excellent vintage condition.

An iconic vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and wood abstract modernist dimensional design pendant on chain necklace by American mid-century studio jeweler, Henry Steig. The epitome of biomorphic design translated into wearable art! An exceptional and very desirable design by this messenger of modernism! Here's a short bio of the artist that I found online:

Everyone knows the famous photo from the film The Seven Year Itch, of Marilyn Monroe standing on a New York City sidewalk, her skirt blown up by an updraft from the subway grate below, however, not everyone knows that at that moment she was standing in front of Henry Steig's jewelry shop at 590 Lexington Avenue.
Henry Steig was a man of many talents, a true renaissance man - before he became a jeweler, he was a jazz musician, painter, sculptor, commercial artist, cartoonist, photographer, and a published short story writer and a novelist. My last photo is a great shot of the artist with one of his sculptures from the 1950s.

This iconic pendant measures 2-1/2" long by 1-1/8" wide by over 1/4" thick in the wood section, and hangs on an 18-1/2" sterling silver chain from Italy. Total weight for the necklace is 16 grams. The pendant is marked as shown, "Steig Sterling". The chain is marked "925 Italy". Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare vintage 1960s handmade sterling silver and enamel Art Deco revival Mask Bullseye modernist design pendant necklace by Uno A Erre of Arezzo, Italy. Exceptional design and craftsmanship! Uno A Erre was founded in 1926 by partners Carlo Zucchi and Leopoldo Gori. The company has a long and celebrated history, and they are still in business today. In the 1960s 70s period they produced highly sought-after modernist designs including this very rare necklace! The only example of this design by them that I have ever seen! The pendant reminds me of a tribal art mask design that has been geometricized resembling Art Deco, but also the chain has links that look like arrows, and the 'mouth' of the mask resembles a bullseye design! Super unique, and you'll likely never see another! Pendant measures 1-5/8" by 1", and hangs on a 16-3/4" unique integral sterling chain. Both chain and pendant are marked "Uno A Erre Italy 925". Superb example of mid century Italian modernist jewelry design! Excellent vintage condition.

A gorgeous vintage 1960s signed handmade 10K yellow gold and turquoise modernist cocktail ring. Makes a huge statement! A large high-topped natural high-quality Persian turquoise cabochon is gripped by a circle of gold prongs encircling the stone! Measures a hair under 1" diameter at top, rises 1/2" above the finger, size 10.5 US, and weighs 14.4 grams total. Signed inside the band, "EB" most likely for a maker in NYC or Providence, RI. Also marked "10K" as shown. The stone measures about 5/8" diameter, and is natural untreated high-quality Persian turquoise. The stone shows a couple tiny dots of greening from age, but overall retains the beautiful original turquoise blue. A really exceptional vintage 1960s couture modernist cocktail ring! (Please note: As of 1/28/26 the scrap value for the gold alone on this ring is over $1000! This is a high fashion cocktail ring probably from NYC, and with a lovely natural turquoise stone as well!) Excellent vintage condition.

A sculptural vintage 1970s signed handmade sterling silver modernist dimensional geometric design pendant on chain necklace. Entirely handmade likely one of a kind piece of wearable modernist art jewelry! The upper sections are polished and bright while the lower sections are oxidized dark for contrast which creates the feeling that the upper pieces are floating in space. The pendant measures 1-7/8" long by 1/2" wide, and hangs on a 17" marked sterling silver chain from Italy. Total weight for the necklace is 11.3 grams. The marks are hand etched and impossible to decipher, although I can make out what looks like a name, and "925" for sterling silver. A unique piece of modernist sculpture to wear! Excellent vintage condition.

A superb vintage 1970s handmade cast patinated bronze modernist 'Daytona' design brooch-pendant necklace from the Flame Bronze series by Björn Weckström for Lapponia Oy in Finland. A colorful and sharp-looking dimensional design that makes a statement! Björn Weckström is one of the most innovative original and famous Finnish jewelry designers of the second half of the 20th century. His Flame Bronze series from the 1970s was inspired by the automobile industry and racing events in the US and Europe. A large and dimensional design brooch-pendant that can be worn as a brooch, or as a pendant necklace. Measures 2.25" tall by 2-1/8" wide by over 3/4" at thickest point, and hangs on the original 26" patinated bronze chain with unique device at back for adjusting the chain at different lengths. Marked at back of the pendant as shown, "Lapponia Bjorn Finland". I also have the 'Isotta Frascini' ring from the same estate that matches this brooch-necklace very well, and can be purchased separately here in my Ruby Lane shop. Excellent vintage condition.

A huge vintage 1960s 70s one of a kind handmade mixed metals (copper and bronze) and lapis lazuli modernist bangle bracelet. Entirely handmade no doubt one of a kind modernist statement bracelet! A very large lapis lazuli cabochon at center top set in a bronze bezel with bronze and copper flaring at the side, and a hinged copper band below! The bracelet measures 2.25" widest point at top, and fits up to about an 8" wrist. Weighs 81.4 grams total. The stone measures 2" long by 1.5" wide. Unmarked. I am certain that this bracelet was made in Chile. I've seen quite a few of the studio pieces from that country, and the style/construction/materials are unmistakeable. Probably only had a paper label when originally purchased which of course would have been removed by the original owner before wearing. Excellent vintage condition.

A vivid vintage 1960s 70s signed handmade sterling silver and enamel geometric modernist brooch. A truly painterly piece with a super bright orange enamel likely on copper that has been placed inside a sterling silver frame, and that has three small round 'cups' of sterling silver covered in red enamel rising above the orange enamel background! Never seen anything like this one before, and no doubt a one of a kind piece of wearable modern art! Like a little painting to decorate your attire! Measures 1.75" by 1.75" square shaped by about 3/8" thickest point, and weighs a substantial 35.3 grams total. Quite heavy for the size! Marked at back with a spiral-shaped maker mark that I haven't been able to identify yet. The maker is a mystery, but the quality of the design and craftsmanship are top-notch! Tested and guaranteed to be as described. From the estate of a NYC collector who traveled the world for her career in publishing, and purchased many unique and wonderful example of the jewelers art along the way! Excellent vintage condition.

a SCULPTURAL vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals (copper, bronze, silver) geometric tribal modernist Mask design brooch by California sculptor/metalsmith Peter Macchiarini of San Francisco. Entirely handmade one of a kind piece of wearable modernist art with a heavy influence of African tribal art in the design! Created using copper, bronze, and sterling silver, and with a white stone inlay. Macchiarini is known for his pods, his sleek geometric designs, and his masks. The mask designs were hugely influenced by his exposure to African and Oceanic tribal art that also influenced just about every great modernist artist of the 20th century!
Measures 3-7/8" tall by almost 1-3/8" wide, and weighs a hefty 27.7 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Macchiarini". Probably one of if not my absolute favorite of his mask designs that I have seen! One of a kind wearable modernist art that you will never see again! Excellent vintage condition.

Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Peter Macchiarini (1909-2001) first made jewelry in 1936 and opened his own business in San Francisco, in 1948, devoting full time to making original contemporary jewelry. His work reflects themes that are reminiscent of Picasso’s cubism and African tribal art. In the stimulating environment of San Francisco‘s North Beach, a hub for the avant-garde, Macchiarini established himself as a pioneering jeweler and sculptor. His Grant Avenue studio, not just a commercial gallery but also a creative space, attracted a culturally robust clientele. This area in California became a crucible for the artist’s development, allowing him to explore various materials and techniques, thereby shaping the trajectory of modernist jewelry in the United States.
Macchiarini left an indelible mark on the world of avant-garde jewelry with his bold and innovative designs. Throughout the mid-20th century, Macchiarini’s work broke away from traditional jewelry-making methods, embracing abstract forms and experimental materials. His unique approach contributed significantly to modernist jewelry design, influencing the aesthetics of personal adornment during a period that celebrated artistic expression and individuality.

A super rare vintage 1940s 50s one of a kind handmade sterling silver futuristic modernist necklace by top-tier mid century modernist silversmith Ed Wiener (1918-1991) of New York City. A striking modernist design entirely handmade from sterling silver sheet that is polished bright at the sides and back, and with four oxidized black plaques at front each with a different futuristic raised design. The symbols portrayed look like futuristic architecture to me, but someone else might see something different. I've only ever seen this design before on a pair of cufflinks by Wiener, this is the only time I've run across this necklace in my 45+ year career! No doubt super rare, and very likely a one of a kind creation!

Ed Wiener was born in 1918, but didn't start making jewelry or art of any kind until after WWII in 1945. He was instantly successful, and the very next year opened his first shop in Provincetown selling Mexican silver jewelry and craft items alongside his own creations. and later the same year opened his first stuio in the East Village. Early the next year, he opened a shop called "Arts and Ends" which was open at one location or another for most of his remaining life. In his early years he worked mostly in silver, but later on added gold and gemstones to his repetoire. He passed in 1991, having left a diverse and impressive body of work, and is accounted amongst the greatest of studio jewelers of his generation.

Measures 15" wearable length presently, and easily adjusted for larger sizes by added extra links at back at the closure. Measures about 1.75" wide at front oxidized plaques. Weighs over 65 grams total. Marked "Ed Wiener Sterling" as shown. Excellent vintage condition.
