Photo: A ship's bell mounted in front of some ship's machinery and engraved with the ship's name: "Sea Cloud," Eastern Atlantic, off the coast of Spain April 2023 According to the Naval History and Heritage Command website: "Used for signaling, keeping time, and sounding alarms, bells are an important part of a ship's routine and readiness. Before the advent of the chronometer, time at sea was measured by the trickle of sand through a half-hour glass. One of the ship's boys had the duty of watching the glass and turning it when the sand had run out. When he turned the glass, he struck the bell as a signal that he had performed this vital function." https://www.history.navy.mil/browse-by-topic/heritage/customs-and-traditions0/the-ship-s-bell.html OM-1: ƒ/5.6, 1/1250, 150mm, ISO400

Photo: A rider on horseback chases down a cow in a competitive cattle sorting event at the D Bar V Arena in Drexel, Missouri in January 2013. All three are moving toward the camera. The cow, which is the closest to us of the three, is speckled and wears a Number 6 bib. It should be sorted before the cow with a 7 and not before the one with a 5. The horse, immediately behind the cow, has its head turned sharply to the left and is eyeballing the cow with its wide open rightside eye. The rider is leaning forward slightly in the saddle and is fully focussed on the cow. The riders aren't told which cow to start with until the event starts. The riders have 60 seconds to move 10 cattle from one pen into another, without letting an 11th (unnumbered) cow into that pen, in sequence starting with whichever cow is wearing the bib with the number that is called out as the event begins. Cellphone Photo: A small, silky white dog, wearing oversized (for him) sunglasses that reflect the ceiling light (in the center) and the windows (at their top edge) (or maybe (?) it's the other way 'round) lays on a hardwood floor, looking expectantly at the camera (not shown), which is in a phone (not shown), held by a guy (not shown) who is supposed to be working but is also supposed to be watching the dog, who has been left in the house by his wife (not shown), who is at work (outside the home (not shown)) but but told her sister (not shown) the dog could stay with her husband (the above-mentioned guy) while her sister (still not shown) was off doing something else. Both the dog and the guy are wondering what they can get up to while they are unsupervised, so, if you could see the guy, he would probably have the same expression as the dog. But neither the dog nor the guy came up with anything good, other than making this picture. Still, all in all, a pretty good day. Photo: Monochrome. Moody light and shadow wrap around a beautiful model, the light and shadow that is typically reserved for a woman leaning against the sill of a window in an upstairs Parisian studio. Maybe a little cleavage or side boob. She might be posing for a perfume ad. As it happens, however, this model is a golden retriever, and this studio, a mud puddle … on a cinder track, behind an abandoned high school. So, sorry. No cleavage. No side boob. No perfume. But, she is no less lovely for that. And the light, the shadow, no less moody. Her name is Lucy. She is a patient and excellent model.

Photo: A wide stone stairway leads upward towards some apartments from a street that was already rising, right to left. On a second level, the stairs are flanked by stone retaining walls. The carved stones of the steps are worn by usage and weather into mottled shades, darker near the center. Sunset is approaching and two old fashioned street lamps on the right side of the stairs have lighted. On the left, near the top, an iron structure supporting cables stands. Photo: Tony wanted two things on this trip to Spain: licorice ice cream and to see AlHambra. As soon as he set foot ashore, he went looking for the ice cream. Walked the center city. He really wanted a cup (without chocolate), but he settled for this ice cream bar. Tony wears a straw fedora and classic sunglasses. He could use a shave maybe. He's down to his last three or four bites of ice cream bar. Behind him is a building with a very tall first floor and barred windows, a bank maybe. Also behind him in soft focus a middle aged woman pushes an elderly man in a wheelchair who is clutching a white cane. And behind them, a young street vendor squats on the curb beside his wares. Photo: Dominating the frame is the Arch of Hadrian, built in the ancient city of Jerash (Gerasa, at the time) over the winter of 129-130 CE to celebrate the anticipated visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Of equal interest, however, is a seemingly dejected man, dressed casually in jeans and tennies and a collared shirt, walking away from the camera and towards the arch, on his way out of the archaeological park, head down, one hand in a hip pocket, the other carrying a bouquet, blossoms downward. Also shown, tourists almost at the arch, a couple of tourist police under the arch, a water trailer in the right foreground that looks as if it may have been abandoned by T.E. Lawrence, and, of course, the arch, which looks very Romanish but also shows some Nabatean influence.
