Digital watercolor of a northern gannet flying. She has a white, body, underwing coverts, secondaries, and tail. The primaries are black. The top of her head is yellowish, and the bottom pale yellow. Her eyes are pale with blue eye lids and outlined in black. Around her eyes is also back. Her pale blue grey beak is long, thick and pointed. The area around the primaries looks like splattered black watercolor paint. The background is various shades of pale blue.

Two Gannets confronting each other at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. These are Western Europe's largest native seabirds, a metre long and with a two-metre wingspan. They're white, with a flush of cream on the head and neck, and black accent markings around the eyes and jaw. They have a long, pointed, serrated bill, black legs and feet with green/blue markings along the line of the bones, and brown wing tips. In this image one bird is slightly above and to the left of the other, and it's the lower bird who is the aggressor. Both have their beaks open, but the higher bird is in a defensive posture, while the lower one, whose beak contains a feather it has already pulled from its rival, is moving forward. There is a Razorbill - a small, black and white auk - standing to the left of the confrontation.

Both aggressors have their beaks open, but the higher bird is in a defensive posture, while the lower one, while the central bird has its head down and its wings spread, and is in clear disarray. Both aggressors have the black irises that suggest they have survived H5N1 avian bird flu. There is a Razorbill - a small, black and white auk - standing to the left of the confrontation, but looking as though it's losing its nerve and preparing to fly.

A Gannet flies past from right to left, so close to the camera that the frame doesn't include the whole of the bird. This is Western Europe's largest native seabird, a metre long and with a two-metre wingspan. It is white, with a flush of cream on its head and neck, and black accent markings around its eyes and jaw. Its visible eye is pale grey, ringed in blue, and it has a long, pointed, serrated bill, black legs and feet with green/blue markings along the line of the bones, and brown wing tips. In this image it is half turning towards the camera, looking to its left and sligtly downwards. Its left wing is extended and angled diagonally down towards the bottom left corner of the image, and its feet (usually tucked beneath the body in flight) are dangling.

Bempton Cliffs - where the Gannets fly so close to the viewing points that you need to be quick with your zoom if you're going to get the entire bird in the frame.

Two Gannets displaying to each other on a rocky crag at Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire. These are Western Europe's largest native seabirds, a metre in length and with a two-metre wingspan. They are white, with a flush of cream on the head and neck, and black accent markings around the eyes and jaw. Their eyes are pale grey, ringed in blue, and they have long, pointed, serrated bills, black legs and feet with green/blue markings along the line of the bones, and brown wing tips. The male bird, right of image, is half sitting on their nest, which contains a tiny, black, still unfeathered chick. The female has just arrived back from a hunting trip out at sea, and has returned with fish in her throat pouch to feed the chick. The adults are now play-fencing with their beaks to reassert their bond and commitment to each other, after which he will step back off the nest and allow her to move in to brood the chick. He will then leave to find food for himself and the chick, and when he returns they will perform the same ritual as they swap childcare duties once again. By the time they stop feeding the chick, when it's about 13 weeks old, it will be as big as they are, and 1/3 heavier. This is because it will take the juvenile several weeks to learn to fly properly and hunt for itself, and the parents play no further part in its life, so it needs a fat reserve to see it through the transition.
