Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Sir Anthony Van Dyck, everyone knows those names, but did they also have #female colleagues working in the arts of their day?
YES, they did! So WHY don't we know them?🤔

Two young women with light skin sit close together on a broad gray rock at the edge of a still pond. They’re framed by dense green foliage of large leaves, tangled stems, and thin branches that arc down like a soft curtain. The woman on the left has long brown hair gathered back with small gold accents. She wears a pale, off-shoulder dress that pools in luminous folds over the stone, and a small hoop earring catches the light. Her body turns toward her companion, chin lifted, as if mid-sentence or listening intently. The woman on the right has dark, curly hair held by a band. She wears a rose-pink sleeveless bodice and a red patterned skirt, cinched with a dark belt, plus a blue-green necklace. She leans in with an open, attentive posture, one arm relaxed on a knee, her gaze steady on the other woman’s face. Behind them, a misty landscape opens to show a tall waterfall that drops into a gorge, with faint buildings far in the distance, softened by haze. Italian artist Gustavo Mancinelli stages intimacy as the subject: not spectacle, not courtship, but the quiet gravity of women speaking to one another where the world feels safely far away. The waterfall and drifting mist add a sense of the sublime (and nature’s scale), yet the emotional center stays small and human via a shared pause, a held gaze, and the comfort of being heard. In 1873, Mancinelli was in the phase of his career where he was based in Naples and actively participating in the city’s main exhibition circuit, especially the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti (Naples). This scene echoes 19th-century genre painting’s interest in everyday narratives, while subtly shifting power toward women’s interior lives with conversation as agency and companionship as refuge. The distant architecture reads almost like “society” pushed to the horizon, while the foreground offers a private clearing where attention, trust, and selfhood can unfold in real time.

American artist William Merritt Chase depicts a mature woman in a rich burgundy red coat sitting on a rose red chair against a crimson red bold and strong background giving Mrs H. a bold and strong character. This portrait of Mrs. Howell is part of a series done of the Howell family by the famous impressionist and art teacher from Indiana. Chase captures her likeness, but with a focus on light and atmosphere rather than precise detail. The painterly brushwork is visible textures and color strokes while the deep colors evoke a sense of depth and atmosphere. Despite the bold red background, the artist gives a soft, muted quality to the painting with nuanced colors that transition gently. Mrs. H. casually sits, with an introspective expression, in a chair draped with a patterned red cloth. Her light brown short hair is styled in a bowl fashion common in the late 1800s that frames her face and fair complexion. She wears a deep burgundy-colored gown, richly decorated with gold embellishments, that cascades down from her neckline. Over this gown is a dark red robe with detailed and layered beige and tan fur-like trim. She also wears off-white gloves. and holds a a bouquet of white roses in her lap. Chase was a brilliant observer, an innovative painter, and a leader in international art circles at the turn of the last century. His importance and legacy as a master is often overlooked. He deserves praise for his artistic skill in both oil and pastel, as well as for the variety of his subjects: sympathetic images of women, jewel-like landscapes, views of urban parks, and scenes of children at play. He was interred in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York after passing away October 25, 1916, at his home in New York City.

A woman with shoulder length straight black pulled above her ear sits in the center of grey wall with grey-ish bell window while turning her head left in full profile. The curve of her head, nose, shoulder and bare arm all mirror the shape lines of the window. Her arms curve around her maroon shoulder strap blouse at the chest and rest in a relaxed fold on the dark skirt covering her lap. She wears no jewelry at all which enhances the effect of the woman’s downward bright red-lipped frown. Roberto Montenegro Nervo was one of Mexico’s most influential painters, muralists and illustrators. He never achieved the fame of peers like Diego Rivera, but few have. Most of his career is dedicated to illustration and publishing, portrait painting and the promotion of Mexican handcrafts and folk art.

Chest of drawers - Massachusetts (Boston) about 1760. Between 1750 and 1800, affluent Boston families often chose the bombé (swelled base) form of furniture. Cabinetmaker Thomas Sherburne of Boston produced similar work. My ancestor Alexander Edwards served as his apprentice. #MuseumofFineArts
