Agreement was reached after a significant international collaboration aimed at stopping or slowing the flow of powerful drugs that have profoundly negative effects on public health. This agreement was made possible – in part – by the International Convention relating to Dangerous Drugs, adopted in 1925 by around 40 nations that wanted to reduce the global opium trade.

On this day in 1961, The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs was signed. The international treaty prohibits the growing, production, and trafficking of dangerous, addictive substances – like cocaine and heroin.
