Does anyone have good differentiation of definitions between main idea, central idea, and central message in nonfiction texts?

Our grades 5-12 ELA department chairs worked on these today, and although our state has definitions, the 3 phrases seem to be synonymous on standardized tests.

- current grades?
- progress on skills?
- work habits?

Can work habits and interest outweigh current ability? Can “poor” or inconsistent learning habits undercut ability?
