The Owl Nebula is appropriately named for the two dark cavities that give the nebula the appearance of an owl’s face. It is a planetary nebula formed when a dying star expelled its outer layers of gas into space. The faint halo surrounding the brighter core consists of older material expanding outward, composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. The Owl Nebula lies in the constellation Ursa Major and is located about 2,000 light-years from Earth.

A 20 hour integration taken over the course of 5 nights in late October of last year (2025). I used an 81mm refractor telescope with a specialized hydrogen filter to enhance the ionization in the gas clouds. The nebula lies some 1500 light years from the earth and is appx 60-100 light years in diameter. To add some perspective to that distance, the Voyager spacecraft travels at roughly 35000 mph. At that speed it would take anywhere between 1 and 1.8 million years to cross the frame of this photo.

Shape: It has a circular, floral shape with a hollowed-out center, which is why it is commonly called the "Rosette". Some observers also refer to it as the Skull Nebula due to how the gas is carved. Colors: The glowing orange and red areas are primarily made of hydrogen gas. The blue and white sections in the center represent other gases, like oxygen, being pushed away by young stars. The Center: At the very heart of the nebula is a cluster of bright, young stars
