National Safe Boating Week: May 17th - 23rd, 2025
Thank you for joining us for Safe Boating Week! Remember when you are heading out on the water, make sure you are prepared and always wear a life jacket. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek
Get to safety if the weather looks threatening. Thunderstorms pose a hazard to mariners. They bring dangerous wind and lightning. Head to land at the first sign of a storm.
The final topic for National Safe Boating Week is Thunderstorm Safety. Thunderstorms can bring gusty winds, lightning, waterspouts and create dangerous wave conditions. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek
📱 Have a communication plan! Make sure someone on land knows your route and expected return time. 🗺️🚤 #NationalSafeBoatingWeek
Even when the air is HOT, water can be COLD. If venturing out when the waters are cold, always wear a life jacket. Even experienced swimmers can quickly lose muscle control. Remember, cold water can kill.
Even with high air temperatures, the lake can be cold. Wear appropriate protective gear and clothing. Consider postponing small craft boating activities until the water temperatures are higher. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek

Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. If at all possible, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax, rip currents don’t pull you under. Don’t swim against the current. Swim out of the current, then to shore. If you can’t escape, float or tread water. If you need help, yell or wave for assistance.
What do you do if you are caught in a rip current? Stay calm and relax, rip currents don’t pull you under. Don’t swim against the current. You may be able to escape if you swim out of the current following the shoreline. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek

Fog safety is an important part of Safe Boating. Dense fog makes it difficult to see what’s ahead. If you encounter dense fog, slow down, listen for sounds and turn on all of your running lights.
Marine Fog Safety is the next topic for Safe Boating Week! Dense fog makes it difficult to see what’s ahead. Visit http://www.weather.gov/safety/fog for more fog safety tips and information. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek

Safe Boating and Understanding the Dangers of Lightning. There are no specific warnings or advisories for lightning but all thunderstorms produce lightning. A lightning strike to a vessel can be catastrophic, especially if it results in a fire or loss of electronics. Boaters should use extra caution when thunderstorm conditions exist and have a plan of escape.
Today’s Safe Boating Week topic is Lightning Safety. Lightning is dangerous and can be deadly. Boaters should use extra caution and stay weather aware when thunderstorm conditions are possible. #NationalSafeBoatingWeek
