Non Finito I -
Les Taches et les Touches

Peaches so real
They cease to be
Edible -
Indestructible in their
Thingness,
Ineluctable in their
Hereness.

Hours spent
Studying brushstrokes;
Fruit outstared until it
Decays into abstract
Mosaics of light -

Vision
Splintered into
Hued rudiments.

Quilted streaks of paint -
Les taches et les touches* -
Patch-daub panoply of
Hint and sense probed into a
Suggestive nexus of
Line and edge:

Forms brittle but
Scrutable;

Forms
Fastidious in their
Ambiguity.

Photon truth
Eyeballed as
Scant-adequate
Clue for
Unravelling by

Brains so
Calibrated that
Reality fails to
Resolve on its
Own.

ARTEMIS, OUR DEVOTION

She is on the hunt
Chasing the knowledge of Selene
Goddess most divine, wild
Lifting us
Carrying us
Towards our destiny
Born first to lead us back home
to our place among the stars
As Leto whispers in Her ear
She shouts We’re going!
Arching back, She draws her bow
Setting aim on a grand adventure
Our new frontier
And we hinge our hopes on Her
Our Goddess most divine, wild
The arrow anchors
and we are pulled into magnificent orbit
Waves and waves of wonder and devotion
Can you see Her?
Her lovely silhouette
staring at us
Smiling as She entices us deeper
and deeper into the cosmos
further and further into the future
Some say there’s a man on the moon
But I can see Her
Can you?

POEM 323: "Shotgun Diagram" by Brendan Byrne

nothing, although it could have been anything,
the frame only holding your body and the gun’s

Sympathetic Resonance I’ve been writing a lot more lately, and submitting pieces to different places. One of the places I’ve started submitting to is the Rattle “Poets Respond” – a weekly call to write something topical, inspired by the news. Since these are going to go out of date very quickly, I’ve decided that, when they’re rejected, they’ll get posted on my Patreon (and, a few days later, here). I once took a short course in music therapy – if I hadn’t left Cardiff, I was planning on going into it as a career – and this news article really struck me, both as a musician, and someone who studied neuroscience as part of my first degree. (We can debate the merits of such a small subject pool another time.) The response piece is a Liwuli, a short, south-east Asian literary form that lends itself to cryptic/ mystical/ philosophical approaches, with its insistence on both giving directions and asking questions. --- Stare into each other’s eyes; blind yourself to the possibility of loss; connection is everything, and you are still here. The beat goes on; synapses hold hands; and we are taken. Now you know, can it ever sound the same? --- If you fancy having a go at writing one of these liwulis yourself, why not try my handy-dandy tool here? Let me know how you get on! Spectrogram of me singing in harmony

Magnolia Minima

The most
Baroque blooms seek to
Mimic our sleek antiquity.

Stellar daisies look archaic:
Dittoed parts,
Symmetric utterness.

But
They are flower-batch
Convolutes recast as
Edenic primitives.

Long before bees,
Our baked niches
Steeped chafer frolics in
Fecund dust.

Self-same tepal,
Coiled into
Cone-scale:

Modular repetition -
Not crude, but
Rare. The

First of our kind – so
Fragile, so few – with
Scant chance of
Fossil posterity.

Mary Ann Evans

She holds fast to the
Immutable mechanics of
Creation -

Celestial clocks driving the
Motions of the soul;
Bell curves upending
Philosophy, usurping
Poetry –

Until her
Heart is broken. Then

All
Matter becomes heat: the
Cosmos decays into fevered
Entropy, the flow of
Disorder moulding the
Psyche - moulding the
Future.

Minds malleable,
Minds like phosphorus,
Minds ceaselessly beginning.

Not clocks, but
Clouds that churn and
Swirl amid a welter of
Inscrutable wills;
Clouds calved and
Borne along by
Numberless currents.

Now she pities those in
Thrall to the
Final Law of the World:
Casaubon lost among
Small closets and
Winding stairs with his
Key to All Mythologies,
Cut down by an

Adipose heart;
Tertius Lydgate riveted to his idée fixe – The Primitive Tissue of Life - floored by
Money mishaps,
Condemned to treat gout.

And yet

Will Ladislaw rebels against an
Inherited blot;

Dorothea Brooke
Ventures,
Falters and
Learns;

Evolution rides upon
Heaped-up error and
Random flux;

Chaos and
Contingency flesh out
Theodicy;

Will and fate
Entangle -

Neither
Fully formed, nor
Fully free.

Eyeless in Taxa

Just one of us can
Befuddle with
Many cloths of
Fleshed excrescence.

Just one of us can
Bamboozle with
Many moods, airs and
Ruses.

Foraging, your kind
Stakes life,
Stakes sanity against our
Horrific odds.

We are those
Hairline fissures that
Hatch killers from the
Docile yolk of
Spouse or
Nobody.

We are those
Pinhead-angel puffs that
Blow common-or-garden
Delusion aflame into
Florid paranoia.

Your sighted kind
Dwells among air,
Light and water.

Your sighted kind
Tacks between the
Fate Morgane of
Syndrome,
Condition and
Disorder.

Unbeholden, we are
Pitch-black, eyeless
Neuron, dendron,
Ganglion and synapse.

Unbeholden, we are
Trillion-fold blind-tangle of
Charge and potential.

With
Spores stained,
Beheld by
Dogged mycologist;
With
Spores made plain,
Beheld in
Shamanic terror:

We will
Galvanize your gut flora,
Lacerate your liver,
Titillate your visual cortex,
Unkink your thought-skein -

Deliver
You unto
Oblivion.

Corvus Agonistes

Famished
Corvid triad
Poised to
Sup on a
Slain king:

Bones to
House them,
Hair to
Nest them,
Flesh to
Feed them.

Now they
Perch outside our
Window, poised to
Claim us as we
Falter. And

Falter we will – in the
Steady flux of
Mood, air and
Fortune. That

Nevermore mania from
Pluto’s coal-black shore
Occulting the pallid
Cast of Reason. That

Black Shuck
Handle for crippling
Despond shadowing his
Stride through
Whitehall and Chartwell,
Keening upon the heels of
Gallipoli. That

Jackdaw-pun
Insignia of
Family omen in Prague – a
Mind stalling at
Minds sharing his

Inner plight. He
Pictures such people – but cannot
Picture the secret corbie that
Circles his head
Circling theirs.

Absurd, malevolent
Worlds he creates,
Inflecting the
Absurd, malevolent
Worlds we create when we

Fixate on figures of
Light, neglecting the
Night we bracket and
Beget.

Shadows deepen in the
Deathly shallows,
Offsetting that
Fable-fetish of
Unmitigated felicity,
Wherein the
Demonic can gain
Ingress -

City-upon-the-Hill
Beacon for
Ear-cut, hang-witch
Massacre.

Trinitite

Instant as
Movement and momentum -

Seeking alms from villagers,
Shirking the world for the
Sake of the Real - to

Surrender care for
Tomorrow, to

Make humble-true
Plain flesh.

Like those earliest
Wanderers whose
Pictographs litter the
Rocks of the range, they
Source food, remedy and
Narcotic from
Beast-plants edging the
Dead Man’s Journey.

Cool crevasse
Pocketing water to
Slake their drouth.

Blind-from-birth
Sight of white
Flash to
Flux their instant - in a

Split-second
Charge-pulse of
Neutron flight.

Copper-iron embodiment,
Soul-grit redemption seed:

Now
Unearthly isotope of verdant
Alamogordo
Glass.
