Moon shot moth!
Our very own furry rocket preparing for blast off from the garden launch pad this morning, Lunar Marbled Brown taking to the air with a calling card left for good measure (it's what I'd do before lift off I'm sure...).

Our top three macros from last night at CMO. Another take of the beautiful Lunar Marbled Brown, a smart Pine Beauty (the 3rd of the year) & also a Swallow Prominent (like the Lunar Marbled Brown this was another NFY species for us).

Chilly again last night, the temperature barely crawling above 5 degrees after a muggy day. Smaller number of moths (22/12) but our 1st Lunar Marbled Brown of 2026 was so smart. Gorgeous moth (someone could make a nice jumper from that pattern).

Pale Prominent
Muslin Moth
09/04/26. 19/7. Roasting day, chilly old night. Pale Prominent & Muslin Moth both NFG. 2 Frosted Green. 1st Orange tip butterfly in the garden. #teammoth #norfolkmoths
Macros today included two NFY's, a slightly battered Dotted Chestnut (likely our only one for the year), two more Streamers, an immaculate Frosted Green and our 1st Powdered Quaker of 2026.

...also at CMO HQ this morning, the first Diamond-back of 2026, likely a migrant off the warm southerly airflow of the last couple of days.

Moth of the Day at CMO today was this superb Caloptilia semifascia (Maple Stilt). One of seven NFY's today in our total of 64/24, the most diverse day of the year so far (with a few micros in the mix which was good to see).

Our 1st Dotted Chestnut at last!
1st Great Prominent of the season, subtle markings.
Not our usual view of a Hebrew Character, on the shed last evening.
A Many-plumed moth was flying around last night and finally landed on the light frame, looks a bit worn.
34/17 last night in Hunstanton, Nfg Dotted Chestnut*, at last!
Nfy Waved Umber, Frosted Green, Great Prominent* & Lunar Marbled Brown.
Also 8 D/S Pugs, 5 Hebrew Ch*., 3 C semifascia, Pine Beauty, Many Plumed*, Powdered Quaker etc.
Sadly a Nut-tree T was caught by a Robin.

Swallow Prominent (Pheosia tremula)
Early Grey (Xylocampa areola)
Early Grey (Xylocampa areola)
Chestnut (Conistra vaccinii)
Other highlights overnight in #Norwich were Swallow Prominent (Pheosia tremula) & Early Grey (Xylocampa areola) - both "new for year". Also this worn Chestnut (Conistra vaccinii) is the first of this species I have a pic for in '26! #norfolkmoths #mothsmatter #teammoth #moths #pollinators #bugsky
Blossom Underwing
Lichen Tortrix (Acleris literana)
08/04/26. 50/14. Superb little 'Mini-Merv'-Lichen Tortrix (Acleris literana) a lifer and NFG. Our second Blossom Underwing was a bit unexpected. Frosted Green & Brindled Beauty best among the expected dross... ๐ #teammoth #norfolkmoths
A really nice moth trap catch overnight in #Norwich. The highlight for me was this beautiful Lunar Marbled Brown (Drymonia ruficornis). Just the sixth garden record (one in '20, four in '24).

Diamond-back Moth
Lunar Marbled Brown
Purple Thorn
45/19 here in Mundford VC28 overnight with Purple Thorn, Lunar Marbled Brown and Diamond-back Moth nfy. 2 Diamond-backs the only #MigrantMoths #teammoth #norfolkmoths
@norfolkmoths.bsky.social @norfolknats.bsky.social The very exotic emperor moth, front and back, in the garden yesterday. #norfolkmoths #mothing
Yellow-barred Brindle was the second New for Year moth here last night. Just like the Streamer, this one was pretty much pristine. Another very smart looking April moth.

2023's Streamer
07/04/2. 25/6. Elation quickly turned to utter disappintment as our first Streamer for three years deftly exited stage left before the photo shoot. So here's one we prepared 3 years ago... ๐ช #teammoth #norfolkmoths

2 Powdered Quakers this morning, one on floor of trap and one found on the grass near the trap.
Nut-tree Tussock, found on wall by trap last night at 8.50, still there this morning.
14/8 last night in Hunstanton, nfy 2 x Powdered Quakers & Nut-tree Tussock. Also a poss Scarce or Pale Maple Stilt.
1st garden Willow Warbler heard & Greenshank calling as we emptied trap.
Yesterday, Holly Blues & Orange-tips in garden

Oak-tree Pug (Eupithecia dodoneata) was another "new for year" species in my #Norwich moth trap this morning. The run of Frosted Green (Polyploca ridens) continues, a lovely fresh but dark individual showing variation with its counterpart. #teammoth #norfolkmoths #mothsmatter #bugsky
Angle Shades (Phlogophora meticulosa) NFY in my #Norwich moth trap this morning. A common but mesmerisingly beautiful species. Always a welcome visitor. #norfolkmoths #moths #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky #pollinators
@norfolkmoths.bsky.social A meagre trap- 30/10 - but NFY lunar marbled brown, 2 frosted green and 2 streamer. A few well marked pugs which always raise hopes! #moths #norfolkmoths
Acleris literana (Lichen Tortrix)
Acleris literana (Lichen Tortrix)
Acleris literana (Lichen Tortrix)
Brindled Pug (upithecia abbreviata). Many people are dismissive or down on pugs. They can be tricky to id, especially when worn. But I rather like them. Perhaps that's the birder in me, always trying to pick out the "wheat from the chaff". This individual is very fresh with intricate patterning & colours, a very easy id and a most welcome visitor. I think I enjoyed it more than the more scare A.literana.
Chuffed to find Acleris literana (Lichen Tortrix) on the moth trap this am, the 2nd garden record. A worn, shabby individual, but you can see why it has it's colloquial name. Brindled Pug (upithecia abbreviata) also "new for year" - my thoughts in ALT. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky #norfolkmoths
Phyllonorycter blancardella/hostis/oxyacanthae to NIG lure this afternoon here in Mundford VC28. Will be either nfy or nfg once I work out which one it is... ๐ฌ #teammoth #norfolkmoths
1 of 10 Early Moth trapped overnight.
06/04/26. 27/5. More a monochrome event than a beige one with a PB of 10 Early Grey! 8 HC, 6 Clouded Drab, 2 Common & 1 Small Quaker. #teammoth #norfolkmoths
1st Brindled Buff this year
Another Oak Beauty, a little worse for wear.
Not so well hidden Common Plume, on edge of shed!
Another well marked Double-striped Pug
9/7 last night in Hunstanton. Nfy Ag.arenella (Brindled Buff)*
Also another Oak Beauty* found on bench, Cmn Plume* found on edge of shed, D/S Pug*, Cl Drab, Cmn Q found on window & 3 Hebrew Ch. #teammoth #norfolkmoths
1st Blackcap singing in garden this year plus Chiffchaff calling.
Brindled Beauty (Lycia hirtaria) was "new for year" in this morning's #Norwich moth trap. Plus a brace of Frosted Green (Polyploca ridens) - always a welcome sight. #moths #teammoth #mothsmatter #norfolkmoths #bugsky
