another example of "nurse log" in practice - a massive (and partially crumbling) tree stump serves as the foundation for a new tree to begin growing from the top - except a closer inspection here shows that at least one tree had previously begun growing from its top, and was ITSELF cut down, but now a third one has begun its life, and at least not so far been felled

An oak sapling growing out of a mossy log.

Something is almost certainly going to eat this but the swamp log does have a new tree growing on it lately. Looks to be oak, which based on the species having its turn this year, probably red oak. (Yes, the trees keep a calendar that they all agree to abide to and take turns.) #plantsky #nurselog

A small tree stump completely covered in different species of lichen. White lichen and darker lichen accidentally grow in places making the stump having a ”face”. On top of the stump is a cluster of dark brown fungi, making it look like the stump man is also wearing a hat.
