Earth's most powerful ocean current didn't form the way we thought Around 34 million years ago, Earth experienced a dramatic transformation during the transition into the Oligocene -- shifting from a warm greenhouse world with little ice to a cooler icehouse climate marked by expanding polar ice sheets. During this period, ocean passages between Antarctica, Australia, and South America widened and deepened. At the same time, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) began to take shape, and the Antarctic Ice Sheet started forming. Atmospheric CO2 levels were about 600 ppm back then. This level has not been reached again since, although some future climate scenarios suggest it could be surpassed by the end of this century. "In order to predict the possible future climate, it is necessary to look into the past with simulations and data to understand our Earth in warmer and more CO2-rich climate states than today," says Hanna Knahl, climate modeller at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and lead author of the study, which now appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). "But careful, the climate of the past can of course not be projected 1:1 onto the future. Our study shows that the circumpolar current in its...

100-Year-Old Barrel Sponge Sliced In Half at 30 m — We Found What Did It
100-Year-Old Barrel Sponge Sliced In Half at 30 m — We Found What Did It YouTube video by Go Dive PH

Divers found a 100-year-old barrel sponge sliced in half at 30m! 🧽🔪

The cause: A construction wire under tension acting like a saw with every wave. The team performed "underwater surgery" to reunite the pieces, hoping the "Redwood of the Reef" survives. 🫧 🐠 💚

Over 70% of protected ocean areas are polluted by sewage A new analysis has revealed that protected ocean zones along tropical coasts often face heavier sewage pollution than nearby unprotected waters. That finding weakens one of conservation’s biggest promises, because a marine boundary cannot keep out contamination flowing from land. Inside the ocean reserves Across a global survey of 16,491 marine protected areas, the pattern became even clearer in 1,855 tropical sites located within 31 miles of the coast. David E. Carrasco Rivera at the University of Queensland analyzed the maps and found that protected status did not mean cleaner water. That leaves every coastal reserve vulnerable, because protection thins out when upstream sewage keeps arriving. What sewage changes Coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and mangrove forests all respond badly when household waste reaches sheltered coastal water. Once that mix reaches shallow water, pathogens travel alongside nutrients that feed algae and cloud the light. A global model estimated that 58% of coral reefs and 88% of seagrass beds already receive wastewater nitrogen. Those chronic hits weaken growth, invite disease, and leave these habitats less able to recover when heat or storms strike. Where pollution peaks The heaviest burdens clustered in East Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, where average and...

10% of the ocean is protected. Now just 20% more to go More than 10% of the world’s ocean is now protected to some degree, marking significant progress in global ocean conservation efforts, according to an Apr. 1. annoucement from the U.N. Environment Programme’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). However, this accomplishment comes six years behind schedule, and experts warn that efforts must pick up speed to meet the more ambitious current goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030. Achieving that will require protecting an additional area about the size of the Indian Ocean within the next four years. The crossing of the 10% threshold follows the recent addition of 284 marine or coastal protected areas in Indonesia and Thailand to the World Database on Protected and Conserved Areas (WDPCA), a platform managed by the UNEP-WCMC. This database tracks progress toward Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the “30×30” goal, which aims to protect nearly a third of the ocean, as well as Earth’s land and inland waters, by the end of the decade. Prior to the creation of the 30×30 goal, governments were focused on Aichi Target 11, which called for protecting 10% of land and water by 2020. The tracking system itself has...

Coastal Rivers announces historic conservation of 500-Acre Hart Woods Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust has announced the conservation of Hart Woods, a 500-acre expanse of ecologically rich forest and wetlands spanning the towns of Bremen and Bristol. On March 30, property owner Eleanor Kinney sold 373 acres of land to Coastal Rivers at 40% below its appraised value, and donated a conservation easement on a neighboring 126 acres. The property consists of parcels she had purchased over many years with future conservation in mind. According to Coastal Rivers Executive Director Steven Hufnagel, this project represents the most acreage conserved in a single transaction by the organization in its history. Together, the properties will create a new permanent home for multiple outdoor education programs and trails, while also protecting water resources and wildlife habitat. “It can take years for a conservation organization like ours to knit together such a large and important natural area as Hart Woods, especially in this region,” Hufnagel said. “That’s why we are particularly grateful to Eleanor, who had the vision—and did the heavy lifting over decades—to assemble this spectacular and meaningful set of properties, and then donated so much value inthem to us. We’re grateful for her hard work, her generosity, and her trust!” Hart Woods...

About 34 Million Years Ago, Earth's Most Powerful Ocean Current Emerged and Reshaped the Climate One of the world's currents carries more than 100 times the water of all the world’s rivers combined and flows without ever hitting land. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current circles Antarctica, shaping global climate as it moves uninterrupted around the southern continent. Researchers have been working to understand how this current first formed and what role it played in turning Earth into a colder, ice-covered world. Now, in a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team has reconstructed how the current developed. Their findings show it did not simply appear once ocean gateways opened. Instead, it took a combination of shifting continents, strengthening winds, and evolving ice sheets before the current took shape and began influencing the climate system we see today. “In order to predict the possible future climate, it is necessary to look into the past with simulations and data to understand our Earth in warmer and more CO2-rich climate states than today,” said Hanna Knahl, lead author of the study, in a press release. How the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Formed During the transition into the Oligocene, a period that began about 34 million years ago, Earth underwent a major climate shift. The...

The World's Most Powerful Ocean Current Required More Than Just Shifting Continents To Kick Into Gear In the Southern Ocean, water roars westward around the Antarctic at about 4 kilometers per hour (2.5 miles per hour), endlessly circling the region. More than 100 times as much water is driven through this current than races to the sea in every river and stream on Earth combined. The rapid movement forms a barrier, blocking the currents that bring warm water from the equator down the eastern coasts of the southern continents (and in one case the western coast). Without the ACC, these warmer waters would lap at the coast of Antarctica, making parts of the frozen continent relatively temperate. We know because it used to be that way. The formation of the ACC initiated the Oligocene Epoch, cooling the entire planet relative to the previous few hundreds of millions of years. Now, PhD student Hanna Knahl at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany and her colleagues have presented evidence that the ACC’s formation was more complex than previously thought. As long as Gondwana – the supercontinent that lasted for hundreds of millions of years until the early Jurassic – existed, the ACC could not exist. During that time, any current running around Antarctica would have slammed into the...
