This is a #broadsheet announcing the #stranding of a whale in Ireland in 1692. It is said that 20 men could fit in its mouth. What a lovely, scaly dragon #whale!

Seeing this depiction of a pilot #whale in an 'indigenous' context is absolutely fascinating! Originally, it was an illustration of an animal that washed ashore near #Zandvoort (NL) in 1594.

Map showing where the coasts where dolphins were recorded between 1527 and 1772. There are records from Cornwall, the Bristol Channel, west Wales, the south coast around Sussex, East Anglia, the Firths of Forth, Shetland and possibly the Firth of Clyde.
Here is where I've found DOLPHINS recorded in Britain 250-500 years ago. ๐ฌ๐
Some surprises here - there are populations recorded around East Anglia and far up the Bristol Channel, where dolphins are rarer today! ๐
