Two arrested for gang rape in Omusati
Two men have been arrested for allegedly raping a 39-year-old woman with an intellectual disability at Oshitudha village in the Omusati region.
Omusati police commander commissioner Ismael Basson says the incident happened at around 22h00 on Monday.
Basson says the two suspects encountered the victim while she was walking from the nearby shops.
“It’s alleged that two suspects grabbed the victim from behind and pushed her to the ground before forcefully having sexual intercourse with her.”
He adds that the matter was reported to the police by a female relative.
Police investigations continue.

Team Omusati gets traditional authority boost
Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup holders Omusati received an undisclosed donation from the Ombalantu Traditional Authority towards their quest to retain the coveted trophy.
The tournament is scheduled to run from Friday to Monday at Outjo, in the Kunene region, where Omusati are pitted in group C against Erongo and Kavango East.
Speaking to Desert FM recently, Omusati football region chairperson Benjamin Ekondo revealed that the team has received an unspecified donation and assistance from the Ombalantu Traditional Authority, boosting morale and preparations.
“Ombalantu chief tatekulu Oswin Mukulu gave us the donation. I do not want to be specific on what they have given us. They donated to the team, and we are quite proud of the donation we received,” Ekondo said.
“They have given so much, and it’s something we never really expected. As we speak I am coming from Okahao to pick up some donations that came through the governor’s office.”
Ekondo said reclaiming the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup last year was an achievement that was well received in the region, hence the support.
“I can tell that achievement was and is still fresh in my mind. Everybody was happy, and all residents in the region wanted to be part of the celebration,” he said.
“It was extremely exciting, and we are confident of a good showing at Outjo to retain the title.”
He said the team’s technical team has been hard at work taking the young players through the necessary ropes.
“Unlike in 2024 when we started early, this year we have not done a lot. However, the team has been in training since 31 March,” Ekondo said.
Omusati has retained about 30% of the players who represented the region at Gobabis.
“Most of our players are new and we truly believe in them to deliver. We are very confident with the new crop of players,” Ekondo said of their readiness.
“Winning the trophy elevated the aspiration and desires of the younger players in the region. Recently, I spoke to the governor, who had an audience with the newly appointed deputy minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Dino Ballotti, who both promised to have a proper football stadium in the region,” he said.
“That came after we have shown our competence and talent during last year’s newspaper cup, and what we are capable of achieving,” Ekondo said.
The defending champions will travel to Outjo on Thursday.

Man drowns in pool of water in Omusati
Police at Onandjaba in the Omusati region are investigating the drowning of a 23-year-old man in a pool of water on Friday.
The police weekend crime report shared on Sunday said the deceased was identified as Peelo Gabriel and his next of kin have been informed of his death.
The incident occurred around 16h00 on Friday at Olupito village in the Okalongo constituency.
“The man’s body was found in the water a few metres away from their house by a neighbour who was looking after his goats. The deceased was last seen on Friday around 13h00 and family members indicated that the deceased was an epilepsy psychosis patient,” says the report.
Meanwhile, a 71-year-old man identified as Erastus Simeon allegedly drowned in a water pond at Ohambada village on Friday around 08h00.
His body was discovered floating in the water pond next to his house.
“It is alleged that he regularly goes fishing in the same pond. The deceased was last seen on Thursday evening. No foul play is being suspected at this moment,” says the report.
His next of kin are aware of his death.
Police at Aranos in the Hardap region are investigating a case of fraud after a 48-year-old woman was defrauded of over N$800 000.
The incident happened on Friday between 16h00 and 17h00.
It is alleged that the victim received a phone call from someone who introduced himself as an employee of Telecom Namibia and said he is busy updating her WiFi.
“The complainant was then told to download an app called ‘ANYDESK’ on both her laptop and cellphone. The victim was told to follow instructions as given by the suspect and during that process, her money was transferred from her bank account without her consent,” says the report.
She was defrauded of N$840 900.
The suspect is not yet identified.
Police investigations into all matters continue.

Poor road conditions delay emergency medical services in Omusati
Hertta-Maria Amutenja
Emergency medical services in the Omusati region have been severely affected by the poor condition of the Okahao-Amwaanda gravel road, especially the 15-kilometre stretch between Okahao and the Indira Gandhi Clinic.
Health officials have confirmed that ambulance response times are significantly delayed.
In some cases, pregnant women have been forced to deliver at home due to the impassable state of the road.
Senior medical officer Okahao district hospital Nghishikushitya Mutilifa, confirmed that the road’s condition has caused dangerous delays in emergency response efforts.
“The ambulance cannot go there, and other off-road vehicles have to move at a very slow pace to transport patients. Some patients have chosen to give birth at home during flooding because the road was inaccessible. Private vehicle owners charge up to ten times the normal fare to transport patients under these conditions,” said Mutilifa.
Health authorities have implemented temporary measures to mitigate the impact on patients.
“We have allocated a vehicle specifically for transporting patients between the health centre and the hospital in emergencies. Additionally, we advise expectant mothers to move to the maternity shelter in Okahao in advance to ensure they can access care when needed,” Mutilia said.
The Omusati Regional Council had previously indicated that the road was included in the 2024/25 key development projects. However, no visible progress has been made.
Regional governor Erginus Endjala acknowledged the issue but pointed to financial constraints.
“The road is a priority, but we currently lack funds. We have two roads under construction—the Tsandi-Onesi and Tsandi-Ogulumbashe roads. We expect to see improvements in this financial year. Inspectors have assessed the damage, and a report will determine which road receives funding first. The Ministry of Works and the Roads Authority control funding, not the regional council,” he explained.
Despite these measures, residents argue that the current situation remains dire and requires urgent intervention.
Maria Alweendo, a resident, described the daily struggle.
“When it rains, the road turns into a muddy mess. Vehicles get stuck, and walking becomes dangerous. We have no choice but to use it.”
The Namibia Association of Local Authority Officials (NALAO) has also raised concerns about the state of road infrastructure, calling for increased funding for urban and rural roads.
NALAO president Moses Matyayi reiterated their previous calls for a minimum allocation of N$570 million for road maintenance, warning that insufficient funding continues to impact communities nationwide.
With the rainy season worsening road conditions in several regions, affected communities continue to call for authorities to act before lives are lost due to delayed emergency medical care.
Residents have long called for authorities to upgrade the road, arguing that its poor condition endangers lives.
Gwamgda Na Hertha, a resident, expressed concern on Facebook.
“Due to recent heavy rainfall, the road has been washed away, making it nearly impassable for residents, emergency services, and daily commuters. This situation has created serious safety hazards and disrupted access to essential healthcare services at Indira Gandhi Clinic.”

Onemanya residents demand urgent road upgrade
Hertta-Maria Amutenja
Residents of Onemanya in the Omusati region are calling on authorities to urgently upgrade the Okahao-Amwaanda gravel road, especially the 15 km stretch between Okahao and the Indira Gandhi Clinic.
They say the road has become nearly impassable due to recent heavy rains, creating safety risks and making access to healthcare services difficult.
The road is a key link for residents, schoolchildren, and emergency services, but has deteriorated to the point where vehicles struggle to pass and pedestrians risk slipping in the mud.
Maria Alweendo, a resident of Onemanya, told the Windhoek Observer that daily life has become a challenge.
“When it rains, this road turns into a muddy mess. Vehicles get stuck, and even walking is dangerous because it is so slippery. It is not safe, but we have no choice but to use it,” she said.
She urged the Omusati Regional Council and the Ministry of Works and Transport to prioritise upgrading the road.
They say further delays could have serious consequences, especially in medical emergencies.
“We are tired of waiting. This road has been in bad condition for years, and every rainy season it gets worse. The government must step in before someone loses their life because they couldn’t get to the hospital in time,” Alweendo said.
Thomas Uushona, another resident, said the poor road conditions are affecting schoolchildren, workers, and local businesses.
“People are late for work, and children struggle to get to school. The cars and taxis here refuse to use the road because it damages their cars, and this leaves us with very few transport options,” he said.
Gwamgda Na Hertha took to Facebook to express concern.
“Due to recent heavy rainfall, the road has been washed away, making it nearly impassable for residents, emergency services, and daily commuters. This situation has created serious safety hazards and disrupted access to essential healthcare services at Indira Gandhi Clinic,” he wrote.
Residents say they have raised the issue several times but have seen no action.
The clinic has seen a decline in patient visits as the road conditions worsen.
Earlier this month, Omusati regional governor Erginus Endjala confirmed that several key roads had been damaged, making travel difficult.
Councillor Leonard Shikulo of the Okahao constituency previously claimed that he had not received any formal complaints about damaged roads in his area.
The condition of the road has also raised concerns about access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those in need of emergency medical attention.
The Indira Gandhi Clinic, which serves the local population, has seen a decline in patient visits due to the difficulty in reaching the facility.
A healthcare worker, who asked not to be named, confirmed that some patients are unable to reach the facility.
“We have had cases where pregnant women and elderly patients struggle to get here. Some turn back home because taxis refuse to take them, and others arrive exhausted after walking long distances,” the health worker said.
By the time of publication, the Omusati Health Director had not responded to questions about the impact on healthcare access.
