Endjala says goodbye to Omusati Omusati governor Erginus Endjala says he might retire as governor on 20 June this year. Endjala made the announcement at the Olufuko Annual Festival gala dinner at Outapi on Saturday. “Today is probably my last day speaking to you as your governor. You know that my extension is only until the 20th of this month,” Endjala said. He noted that some people in the region have said he overstayed his time as governor. “I don’t know if I will get the chance to say goodbye to some of you individually, but in style, I say goodbye to you. I know some of you were saying I overstayed,” he said. Endjala said during his tenure as governor of the Omusati region, people responded positively whenever he called on them. “I will forever be grateful to have led this beautiful region of ours. Let’s continue with the unity of purpose. Let’s continue to support whoever takes over.” He added that he is not leaving the region and will continue to attend Olufuko as a regular member of the community. “We will continue to contribute in our own way. Don’t worry. That’s just the wind of change,” he said. Before he stepped down as president, Nangolo Mbumba in March this year extended the terms of regional governors by three months. During his time in office, Endjala made tribal remarks against certain ethnic groups and politicians in a recorded conversation that went viral on social media in 2017. Former president Hage Geingob later compelled him to retract the remarks and issue a public apology, which he did. The post Endjala says goodbye to Omusati appeared first on The Namibian.

Toddler drowns in well at Omusati village A boy (1) reportedly drowned in a well at Omukwa village in the Omusati region on Saturday. The police in their weekend crime report say Heikki Zeferinus’ body was discovered around 16h30 in the well at the village in the Elim constituency. “The deceased followed other children, aged four and eight, respectively, who went to fetch water from a well near their house. It is further alleged that the deceased started to cry as he wanted to be carried by the other children, but they left him behind near the well as they went to drop the water containers they were carrying at the house,” the report reads. When the children returned, they could allegedly not find Heikki. Police investigations into the matter continue. Meanwhile, a man (51) drowned at Omapundo village in the Oshikoto region over the weekend. The deceased has been identified as Shitutuma Martin, who allegedly drowned in a water pan on Friday around 18h00. “The deceased left the cuca shops where he was drinking tombo with other people and walked into a water pan near the cuca shops. He kept walking into the water until he became submerged and drowned. Onlookers alerted the police, but his body was only retrieved the next day as it was already dark,” the crime report states. Martin’s next of kin have been informed of his death. Police investigations are ongoing. The post Toddler drowns in well at Omusati village appeared first on The Namibian.

Omusati open with a draw  Omusati opened their account with a 1-1 draw against Kavango East in a Group C match at the Nedbank Namibia Newspaper Cup on Saturday morning.  Kavango East created more chances in the first half with Simon Ndumba hitting the post with a cracking shot, while a Jonas Parata shot went narrowly wide of the target.  Omusati however came back strongly with Tango Aindongo cutting through the defence with a fine run but his shot was well saved by a diving Engleberth Kapinga. Kavango East took the lead early in the second half from a cracking shot by Christo van Wyk but Omusati immediately equalised from the kickoff when Innocent Nghinyengwashi scored with a great shot from the edge of the box.  The result leaves Kavango East at the top of the log on four points from two matches. Oshana meanwhile recorded their second successive win after thumping Ohangwena 4-0. Striker Michael Jonas had a great game scoring a hattrick, while substitute Julinho Alfons scored their fourth goal.  The result leaves them at the top of Group B on six points from two matches, while Ohangwena have one point from two matches.  Kavango West went to the top of Group D after a 1-0 win over Otjozondjupa.  Super sub Kemba Hausiku got the winner with a great volley midway the second half to send Kavango West to the top of Group D on four points from two matches.  The post Omusati open with a draw  appeared first on The Namibian.

Newspaper Cup champions in challengers’ crosshairs  The Khomas and Omusati regions can expect to have their hands full at Outjo over the next four days, fending off rivals who have designs on claiming their Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup titles. The defending netball and football champions say they are prepared for whatever their challengers throw at them. In the netball section, Khomas have a sizeable target on their back as they bid to win an unprecedented fourth consecutive Newspaper Cup. Their rivals have made no secret of their desire to rip the crown from their grip and put an end to the honours monopoly. But Khomas, who begin their tournament against Oshikoto tomorrow, has no plans to relinquish their hold on the coveted trophy, its regional secretary general Erica van Zyl says. They have prepared meticulously, bringing in several fresh faces to bolster the ranks. “We began with constituency trials before selecting our regional team, which then participated in several camps leading up to the tournament,” Van Zyl says. She says thorough and timely preparations have been the hallmarks of Khomas’ title-winning campaigns. The focus during camp has been on teamwork and cohesion. “Our girls have been trained in the fundamentals of netball from an early age, making the transition to under-19 level seamless. “We also have programmes to train teachers at primary and high school level, who then pass on their knowledge to the players. This will be evident during the tournament,” Van Zyl explains. Continuity is another reason for Khomas’ continued dominance. In retaining two-time Newspaper Cup-winning coach Enrica Farmer, the champions maintain the standard and formula required to stay winning. Farmer is confident in her team’s ability to secure a fourth consecutive victory despite losing about 90% of their players to the Region 5 team to represent Namibia at the international youth competition in Windhoek in June and July. “Most of the new girls play in the Khomas league and the school league. I have been in touch with their coaches to monitor their performances and have given them specific instructions on areas for improvement,” Farmer says. Similarly, defending Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup football champions Omusati began their preparations for their title defence as early as October last year, an indication of their intent to retain their crown. The majority of their under-20 squad competes in the region’s second division, which kicked off around that time. Omusati Namibia Football Association regional chairperson Benjamin Ekondo feels a third title is in the offing at the scene of their first Newspaper Cup success. “We have retained the management and technical team that led us to victory at Gobabis last year. The draw is once again favourable to us. “Like last year, we have two teams in our group. Our preparations have gone well, and we have selected the best possible team,” Ekondo says. Head coach Shipena Nakalondo echoed Ekondo’s sentiments, saying the desire to remain champions is strong within the camp. They kickstart their title-defense against former winners Kavango East on Saturday. “We come to this tournament with the intention of defending our title. We understand that all the other teams want to beat us, but we are ready. We have the core of the team that won us the trophy last year, and we have infused new talented players into the squad.” Nakalondo said the training camp at Omakange had gone well despite some players having school commitments. The team managed to play a few friendly matches as part of their preparations. The Newspaper Cup’s co-sponsors, Nedbank Namibia, reaffirmed the bank’s continued commitment to investing in youth development through sport. “Nedbank Namibia is proud to once again be part of the Namibian Newspaper Cup, a tournament that continues to shape the future of young football and netball players across the country. We extend our deepest gratitude to the local organising committee for their dedication to ensuring a successful event,” says Nedbank Namibia spokesperson Selma Kaulinge. She called on the nation to get behind the youngsters as they compete for national glory and begin their transition from youth sport to elite level. “We believe this tournament provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent. To all participants, I encourage you to give your best, play with passion and fairness, and embrace this opportunity to grow,” Kaulinge said. “Sport is no longer just a pastime, it has become a profession that can open doors to a successful future. We wish all teams the best of luck.” The post Newspaper Cup champions in challengers’ crosshairs  appeared first on The Namibian.

Team Omusati gets traditional authority boost Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup holders Omusati received an undisclosed donation from the Ombalantu Traditional Authority towards their quest to retain the coveted trophy. The tournament is scheduled to run from Friday to Monday at Outjo, in the Kunene region, where Omusati are pitted in group C against Erongo and Kavango East. Speaking to Desert FM recently, Omusati football region chairperson Benjamin Ekondo revealed that the team has received an unspecified donation and assistance from the Ombalantu Traditional Authority, boosting morale and preparations. “Ombalantu chief tatekulu Oswin Mukulu gave us the donation. I do not want to be specific on what they have given us. They donated to the team, and we are quite proud of the donation we received,” Ekondo said. “They have given so much, and it’s something we never really expected. As we speak I am coming from Okahao to pick up some donations that came through the governor’s office.” Ekondo said reclaiming the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup last year was an achievement that was well received in the region, hence the support. “I can tell that achievement was and is still fresh in my mind. Everybody was happy, and all residents in the region wanted to be part of the celebration,” he said. “It was extremely exciting, and we are confident of a good showing at Outjo to retain the title.” He said the team’s technical team has been hard at work taking the young players through the necessary ropes. “Unlike in 2024 when we started early, this year we have not done a lot. However, the team has been in training since 31 March,” Ekondo said. Omusati has retained about 30% of the players who represented the region at Gobabis. “Most of our players are new and we truly believe in them to deliver. We are very confident with the new crop of players,” Ekondo said of their readiness. “Winning the trophy elevated the aspiration and desires of the younger players in the region. Recently, I spoke to the governor, who had an audience with the newly appointed deputy minister of education, innovation, youth, sport, arts and culture Dino Ballotti, who both promised to have a proper football stadium in the region,” he said. “That came after we have shown our competence and talent during last year’s newspaper cup, and what we are capable of achieving,” Ekondo said. The defending champions will travel to Outjo on Thursday.  The post Team Omusati gets traditional authority boost appeared first on The Namibian.

Man drowns in pool of water in Omusati Police at Onandjaba in the Omusati region are investigating the drowning of a 23-year-old man in a pool of water on Friday. The police weekend crime report shared on Sunday said the deceased was identified as Peelo Gabriel and his next of kin have been informed of his death. The incident occurred around 16h00 on Friday at Olupito village in the Okalongo constituency. “The man’s body was found in the water a few metres away from their house by a neighbour who was looking after his goats. The deceased was last seen on Friday around 13h00 and family members indicated that the deceased was an epilepsy psychosis patient,” says the report. Meanwhile, a 71-year-old man identified as Erastus Simeon allegedly drowned in a water pond at Ohambada village on Friday around 08h00. His body was discovered floating in the water pond next to his house. “It is alleged that he regularly goes fishing in the same pond. The deceased was last seen on Thursday evening. No foul play is being suspected at this moment,” says the report. His next of kin are aware of his death. Police at Aranos in the Hardap region are investigating a case of fraud after a 48-year-old woman was defrauded of over N$800 000. The incident happened on Friday between 16h00 and 17h00. It is alleged that the victim received a phone call from someone who introduced himself as an employee of Telecom Namibia and said he is busy updating her WiFi. “The complainant was then told to download an app called ‘ANYDESK’ on both her laptop and cellphone. The victim was told to follow instructions as given by the suspect and during that process, her money was transferred from her bank account without her consent,” says the report. She was defrauded of N$840 900. The suspect is not yet identified. Police investigations into all matters continue. The post Man drowns in pool of water in Omusati appeared first on The Namibian.

Poor road conditions delay emergency medical services in Omusati Hertta-Maria Amutenja Emergency medical services in the Omusati region have been severely affected by the poor condition of the Okahao-Amwaanda gravel road, especially the 15-kilometre stretch between Okahao and the Indira Gandhi Clinic. Health officials have confirmed that ambulance response times are significantly delayed. In some cases, pregnant women have been forced to deliver at home due to the impassable state of the road. Senior medical officer Okahao district hospital  Nghishikushitya Mutilifa, confirmed that the road’s condition has caused dangerous delays in emergency response efforts. “The ambulance cannot go there, and other off-road vehicles have to move at a very slow pace to transport patients. Some patients have chosen to give birth at home during flooding because the road was inaccessible. Private vehicle owners charge up to ten times the normal fare to transport patients under these conditions,” said Mutilifa. Health authorities have implemented temporary measures to mitigate the impact on patients. “We have allocated a vehicle specifically for transporting patients between the health centre and the hospital in emergencies. Additionally, we advise expectant mothers to move to the maternity shelter in Okahao in advance to ensure they can access care when needed,” Mutilia said. The Omusati Regional Council had previously indicated that the road was included in the 2024/25 key development projects. However, no visible progress has been made. Regional governor Erginus Endjala acknowledged the issue but pointed to financial constraints. “The road is a priority, but we currently lack funds. We have two roads under construction—the Tsandi-Onesi and Tsandi-Ogulumbashe roads. We expect to see improvements in this financial year. Inspectors have assessed the damage, and a report will determine which road receives funding first. The Ministry of Works and the Roads Authority control funding, not the regional council,” he explained. Despite these measures, residents argue that the current situation remains dire and requires urgent intervention.  Maria Alweendo, a resident, described the daily struggle. “When it rains, the road turns into a muddy mess. Vehicles get stuck, and walking becomes dangerous. We have no choice but to use it.” The Namibia Association of Local Authority Officials (NALAO) has also raised concerns about the state of road infrastructure, calling for increased funding for urban and rural roads. NALAO president Moses Matyayi reiterated their previous calls for a minimum allocation of N$570 million for road maintenance, warning that insufficient funding continues to impact communities nationwide. With the rainy season worsening road conditions in several regions, affected communities continue to call for authorities to act before lives are lost due to delayed emergency medical care. Residents have long called for authorities to upgrade the road, arguing that its poor condition endangers lives. Gwamgda Na Hertha, a resident, expressed concern on Facebook. “Due to recent heavy rainfall, the road has been washed away, making it nearly impassable for residents, emergency services, and daily commuters. This situation has created serious safety hazards and disrupted access to essential healthcare services at Indira Gandhi Clinic.”

Omusati crocodile victim was warned to stay away from reptile A man attacked by a crocodile at Epalela in the Omusati region had been warned by the police to stay away from the reptile, Onesi constituency regional councillor Festus Petrus says. The man was attacked at Epalela on Saturday. According to Petrus, the man touched the crocodile with his hand on its back after several other people had grabbed the reptile’s tail and pulled it in their direction. “The crocodile was initially seen crossing the road near Etaka Dam in the morning, and a taxi driver bumped into it. However, despite being hit, it was still able to defend itself,” Petrus said. Petrus estimated the crocodile to be about three meters long. “When the police and I arrived, we warned the public to stay away from the crocodile, but they did not listen. They kept pulling its tail, while others kicked it to check if it was alive,” Petrus recounted. The crocodile then moved forward into shallow water, and members of the public, including the man bitten later, followed it, he said. “He was warned to leave the crocodile alone, as he could be attacked. He did not listen. Within the blink of an eye, we heard people screaming and the man’s arm was already in the crocodile’s mouth,” Petrus said. The man was taken to Outapi Hospital and the crocodile was killed. Petrus added that this was the third crocodile captured from Etaka this year. Onemanya residents demand urgent road upgrade Hertta-Maria Amutenja  Residents of Onemanya in the Omusati region are calling on authorities to urgently upgrade the Okahao-Amwaanda gravel road, especially the 15 km stretch between Okahao and the Indira Gandhi Clinic. They say the road has become nearly impassable due to recent heavy rains, creating safety risks and making access to healthcare services difficult. The road is a key link for residents, schoolchildren, and emergency services, but has deteriorated to the point where vehicles struggle to pass and pedestrians risk slipping in the mud. Maria Alweendo, a resident of Onemanya, told the Windhoek Observer that daily life has become a challenge. “When it rains, this road turns into a muddy mess. Vehicles get stuck, and even walking is dangerous because it is so slippery. It is not safe, but we have no choice but to use it,” she said. She urged the Omusati Regional Council and the Ministry of Works and Transport to prioritise upgrading the road. They say further delays could have serious consequences, especially in medical emergencies. “We are tired of waiting. This road has been in bad condition for years, and every rainy season it gets worse. The government must step in before someone loses their life because they couldn’t get to the hospital in time,” Alweendo said. Thomas Uushona, another resident, said the poor road conditions are affecting schoolchildren, workers, and local businesses. “People are late for work, and children struggle to get to school. The cars and taxis here refuse to use the road because it damages their cars, and this leaves us with very few transport options,” he said. Gwamgda Na Hertha took to Facebook to express concern. “Due to recent heavy rainfall, the road has been washed away, making it nearly impassable for residents, emergency services, and daily commuters. This situation has created serious safety hazards and disrupted access to essential healthcare services at Indira Gandhi Clinic,” he wrote. Residents say they have raised the issue several times but have seen no action. The clinic has seen a decline in patient visits as the road conditions worsen. Earlier this month, Omusati regional governor Erginus Endjala confirmed that several key roads had been damaged, making travel difficult. Councillor Leonard Shikulo of the Okahao constituency previously claimed that he had not received any formal complaints about damaged roads in his area.  The condition of the road has also raised concerns about access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those in need of emergency medical attention.  The Indira Gandhi Clinic, which serves the local population, has seen a decline in patient visits due to the difficulty in reaching the facility. A healthcare worker, who asked not to be named, confirmed that some patients are unable to reach the facility. “We have had cases where pregnant women and elderly patients struggle to get here. Some turn back home because taxis refuse to take them, and others arrive exhausted after walking long distances,” the health worker said. By the time of publication, the Omusati Health Director had not responded to questions about the impact on healthcare access.
