From a suggested 17th century Christmas Day menu to a children's party for locals and evacuees in 1939, via Christmas trees, presents, weddings and births, Alex @wychwoodnz.bsky.social has seasonal #OnePlaceEntertainment and more in her Wing #OnePlaceStudy wrapped up in one post. #OnePlaceWednesday
I have Pierrots (performing to entertain wounded soldiers and raise funds for Red Cross hospitals during WW1) in my #OneNameStudy but not (so far!) in any of my #OnePlaceStudies. Anyone else? #OnePlaceEntertainment
And a special mention for pantomime! Did it feature in #OnePlaceEntertainment taking place in any #OnePlaceStudies?
Residents in Nunney, Somerset, held a fancy dress pageant as part of Wings for Victory Week 1943. A series of events were held to raise money for the war effort. A rowing contest with a banana as the top prize was won by the girls’ team. #OnePlaceEntertainment #OnePlaceStudy #history #skystorians 🗃️
Did the residents of any of our #OnePlaceStudy places entertain themselves and others with fancy dress competitions / parties, pageants, operatic / theatrical or other events in which they donned costumes? #OnePlaceEntertainment is our blogging and social media prompt for December.
For #OnePlaceEntertainment, get a lad in.
Sorry, that should be: get Aladdin.
#OnePlaceStudies #Genieology 😉
Where did the residents of our #OnePlaceStudies go to enjoy or put on entertainment? A village hall or school, or somewhere grander / more ostentatious? #OnePlaceEntertainment is our blogging and social media prompt for December.
Just uploaded to the archive, "Bourne Yesterday" by Margaret Wedge (with her permission). This is one of the newer booklets about #StMaryBourne. Pg's 12-14 have details about entertainment.

Just a quick repost using the hashtag #OnePlaceEntertainment The event is over now and people turned up, despite the weather, to listen to the musical entertainment as much as to view the trees.

Mr H. Earl, conductor of the Nunney Delamere Choir.
When the Nunney Delamere Choir’s conductor Mr Earl died, the massed choirs sang a hymn at the next choir competition, with the Nunney choir singing the final verse solo. #OnePlaceStudy #OnePlaceEntertainment #Somerset

For #OnePlaceStudy #OnePlaceEntertainment here’s a photo of the Nunney Delamere Choir. They took part in many regional competitions and often won. #Nunney #Somerset
The prospect of even more #OnePlaceEntertainment to come, and other fascinating OPS material too by the looks of it! #OnePlaceWednesday
Sounds familiar. Objections against Loughborough Hotel, mini music hall, included, would be “demoralising to the neighbourhood … and encourage youths and girls to assemble and have a corrupt influence”! #OnePlaceEntertainment

It was always told to me that my father was not allowed into his granny’s (Princess Road Lambeth) because she had theatricals boarding there. In 1921 I found a conductor. An actress and a theatre worker. #OnePlaceEntertainment
More #OnePlaceEntertainment on #OnePlaceWednesday!
For this months theme of #oneplaceentertainment I’ve unearthed an article I wrote 11 years ago about a Dallington lad who rejected rural life for a controversial life as a showman dallingtonhistory.uk/2013/09/03/t...
Been a bit quiet here and late to #OnePlaceWednesday today but as it’s #OnePlaceEntertainment promp here is a @layersoflondon.bsky.social collection of #musichall entertainers and venues from my #StreetStudy and surrounding neighbourhood www.layersoflondon.org/map/collecti...
Was #Rillington fun? Not sure! In 1865 The Malton Gazette reported “It was the scene of great rejoicing, QUITE UNUSUAL HERE, even at this season of the year. Rev & Mrs McDowall entertained 20 widows & old men on Christmas Day with roast beef, plum pudding + a sum of money.” #OnePlaceEntertainment
Any other #OnePlaceStudies with bands that provided #OnePlaceEntertainment? (I know that one of mine did for a while, but have yet to find the names of any of the members!) #OnePlaceWednesday

Intended to post on #OnePlaceWednesday as well as #OnePlaceEntertainment but left a space in the former hashtag, so please see the latter if you want to see my post! Does anyone know if there is a way to edit something already posted?
Advert for Laidlaw panorama Worcester Journal June 1841
One of the reports of Laidlaw murder in June 1854
A family named Laidlaw lodged in my OPS, Edgar Street, Worcester, in the 1841 census and were providing #OnePlaceEntertainment in the city. Although they were only there for a few weeks they led eventful lives and one of the brothers was murdered in St Louis, Missouri in 1854! #OnePlace Wednesday
#OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceEntertainment Once the village hall was built, it was used for all sorts including Christmas parties for the children of Long Buckby Wharf. 1940 saw a big party!
On this #OnePlaceWednesday I'm enjoying an early Christmas present from the British Newspaper Archive: many past editions of the #Shropshire Star. Finding lots for #OnePlaceCharities and also for #OnePlaceEntertainment at Waters Upton - snooker matches, whist drives, fetes and flower shows so far.
I can’t possibly tell the story of what the people of my place did to entertain themselves and others. It involved annual Black and White Minstrel Shows at the Church Rooms by people who are still alive. Photos and programmes. 😳

Our #OnePlaceStudies blogging and social media prompt for December is #OnePlaceEntertainment. What did the people of your place do to entertain themselves and others, on high days & holidays (including Christmas) or in their daily lives? We look forward to some entertaining posts! #OnePlaceWednesday
This one has prompted me to remind #OnePlaceStudy people and #FamilyHistory folk blogging about ancestral places, that our #OnePlaceStudies blogging and social media theme for December is #OnePlaceEntertainment. Looking forward to a variety of blog and social media posts!
