Saw my first Chequered Swallowtail (Papilio demoleus) in Katherine this week.

This widespread tailless swallowtail occurs across Asia and Australia and its caterpillars feed on citrus plants.

Things sparking some joy.
Bought this really cool Papilio dardanus Flying handkerchief Swallowtail butterfly shadow box and added it to the gallery wall, also found these cute pins at the same market, and obvi my plants. They always spark joy.

まるまると太った派手なイモムシが、大きな葉っぱの上にデン!と乗っていて、ぎょっとしちゃいました。こんなに目立ってるけど、大丈夫なのかな?と余計な心配を。蛹になる直前くらいでしょうか。

A dark morph of the #tiger #swallowtail, #Papilio #glaucus, was also nectaring on whorled #milkweed. I snapped photos of the top & underside of the wings.

Butterfly in flight above whorled milkweed plants with black forewings marked on the underside with one row each of yellow triangles and circles near the trailing wing margin. The hind wing also bears two parallel rows of yellow marks, but with intervening blue polygons and conspicuious tails. The body is also black with yellow spots along the side of the abdomen.

This is a close-up, horizontal photograph of a butterfly with its wings spread wide, resting on a cluster of purple flowers amidst green leaves. The lighting is bright and natural, suggesting a sunny day.
The butterfly, the central subject of the photo, has a fuzzy, pale-colored body and a long, slender tail at the bottom of its hindwings. Its large wings are a creamy white with six striking, thick black "tiger stripes" on each forewing. The outer edges of the hindwings are scalloped and feature small blue crescent markings and a splash of orange.
This butterfly is a Scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius), a species common across Europe and parts of Asia. It is a powerful flyer with a wingspan of 60–90 millimeters. Its caterpillars primarily feed on plants from the Prunus genus, such as blackthorn and cherry trees.
The butterfly is perched on a plant with numerous small, deep purple, five-petaled flowers arranged in tight clusters. Surrounding the butterfly and flowers are many vibrant green leaves of various shapes and sizes.
The plant is definitively a Golden dewdrop (Duranta erecta), also known as Pigeon berry or Skyflower. Native to the Americas, this flowering shrub is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions for its ornamental beauty. The plant produces the clusters of light blue to purple flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds, which are then followed by small, golden-yellow berries. It is important to note that the leaves and unripened berries of this plant are toxic if ingested by humans and many pets.

An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) butterfly was visiting a flower in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on June 18, 2025. The shrub is an invasive species in some places, but this one does not appear to me to produce seeds or to spread, so I have let it grow.

Black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes) deploying its eversible osmeterium at me. I'm not positive what chemicals the gland emits but a related species produces a rancid butter odor (isobutyric acid, 2-methylbutyric acid, etc.). But that might be for just older instars. #butterfly #papilio #dill 🌿🦋

Now just another link in the food chain. The black #swallowtail #caterpillar, #Papilio #polyxenes, that was feeding for >1 wk on my golden alexanders, #Zizia aurea, met its demise in the clutches of a crab #spider this evening. Caterpillars are “kibble” for many #predators.

“Doing the twist.” A 2nd instar black #swallowtail #caterpillar, #Papilio #polyxenes, dining on a golden alexanders, #Zizia aurea, #flower. The coming instars will give up their resemblance to bird droppings and become more green & harder to find in dense vegetation.
