River Rock/Drainage: "A dry creek bed using local river rock. Tip: I’ve followed the natural flow of the water in my yard, allowing it to percolate into the soil rather than the storm drain. This protects the local watershed and keeps the garden hydrated." Nursing Logs/Mulch: "Strategic placement of decaying logs among the woodchips. These act as 'slow-release sponges' for moisture and provide essential habitat for the beetles and fungi that drive soil health. This is how we build a forest floor from scratch." Pots Layout: "Native plants in 1-gallon pots laid out according to the Muse blueprint. Note the layering: Tall Oregon Grape for structure, Sword Ferns for the mid-layer, and Kinnikinnick as the evergreen groundcover to suppress future weeds."

Sundays in the PNW = recharge mode 🌲🦓

Tomorrow kicks off "Doer March", 31 days of invasive removal, sheet mulch planting, and ditching that high-maintenance lawn.

But today? Rest. Observe. Prep for the spring sprint.

See you in the dirt tomorrow. 🛡️

☕ Saturday challenge: Grab coffee or tea and watch your yard before the March rains hit. Where does water pool? Run off? Stay soggy?

In WildscapeMuse, these aren't problems, they're rain garden opportunities. 🌧️

10 min now = better design later.

Mason Bees need 4 things to thrive in your PNW garden:

Nov-Feb: Hollow stems for shelter
Mar-Apr: Blooms when temps hit 50°F
Apr-May: Damp, clay-rich mud for egg chambers
Jun-Oct: Undisturbed stems where larvae mature

Your garden is a life support system. 🐝🌿

Your yard: sponge or drain? 🌿

PNW gardens face climate whiplash, atmospheric rivers then heat domes. Traditional lawns fail both tests.

The fix? Native plants + organic matter = a living sponge that holds 20,000 extra gallons.

The oregano I’ve neglected and let spread further in our garden beds than intended each year brings so many birds when it’s at seed, I can’t see myself taking any of it out. 🌱 #PNWgarden #ChaosGarden #BirdFeed

🌲 While others bundle up their garden "divas" for winter, PNW natives are living their best life! From glossy Evergreen Huckleberry to burgundy Oregon Grape, they're thriving (not just surviving) in our winter weather.

Ready to stop the winter stress?

Mucilagenous seeds on my rush grass. I thought they were galls of some sort at first glance.

Side note-mucilagenous is now my fav word.

Side, side note- why is there not an emoji for slime?

Just love the transformation of this hydrangea every summer- it starts out with white flowers in early summer and transitions to this beautiful pink as summer comes to an end.

Thus endeth the three months out of the year when it's warm outside. Nice while it lasted. #whine

Unfortunately this is also the time to prep for fall starts, scrub dozens of pots and planters. Can put on long sleeves but WET + chilly is still not fun.

re: Hyacinth bulbs (Hyacinthus orientalis) - if they're planted outside, in the Seattle area strip of 8B along the Sound, will they get enough winter chilling to bloom well in spring? I'm running out of fridge-chilling-space here.

Just went out to the garden and snagged some delightful looking produce for dinner. Tonight, I am making a one-pot chicken and rice with garden vegetables.

Recipe will be up on the blog soon!

How are we doing this year? I'm doing good except for my beans (dry and green) all got zapped by the heat in July. They're recovering. Everything else, *chefs kiss.
