#OTD On March 31, 1942, the IJN seized Christmas Island after an Indian mutiny neutralized the British garrison. The occupation damaged key phosphate facilities. Vulnerable to Allied submarines and lacking an airfield, Japan was forced to withdraw its main forces by late 1943.
