The Hale 200-inch Telescope at Palomar Observatory stands silhouetted against a night sky, its dome illuminated by moonlight. The Teapot asterism in Sagittarius is visible. However, the observatory's shutters are closed due to wildfire smoke, a precaution to protect the historic mirror.

A stunning image of Markarian's Chain, a string of galaxies within the Virgo Cluster. The image, a small section of the "Big Picture" mosaic from the Samuel Oschin Telescope, showcases prominent galaxies M84 and M86, along with several spiral galaxies. The Virgo Cluster, the nearest cluster to our own, is home to over 2,000 galaxies and exerts a significant gravitational influence on the Local Group. This image will soon be featured as a mural at the renovated Griffith Observatory.

A stunning infrared image of Neptune, captured by the Palomar High Angular Resolution Observer (PHARO) using adaptive optics technology to overcome atmospheric blurring. The image reveals details of Neptune's atmosphere, showcasing its red glow and brighter regions. This unprecedented clarity showcases the power of advanced telescope technology in observing distant planets.

Stunning infrared image of Neptune captured by the Palomar High Angular Resolution Observer (PHARO) using adaptive optics technology. The image reveals unprecedented clarity of the distant planet, showcasing its red-hued surface and atmospheric details despite Earth's atmospheric interference. Neptune radiates twice the energy it receives from the Sun, a fascinating characteristic highlighted in this exceptional view.

A breathtaking widefield view showcasing the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635), a delicate cosmic bubble nestled amongst a sea of stars and glowing gas. Located approximately 11,000 light-years away, the image also captures the open star cluster M52 in the upper left. This vibrant image, composed from photographic plates taken at the Palomar Observatory, spans about 2.7 degrees across the sky.

Vera Rubin (1928-2016) was an American astronomer whose work provided compelling evidence for dark matter, reshaping our understanding of the universe. Barred from Princeton's graduate program due to her gender, she earned a master's degree at Cornell in 1951 and a Ph.D. at Georgetown in 1954. Her dissertation challenged established views by proposing that galaxies clump together. Throughout her career, Rubin faced sexism, including meeting with advisors in a lobby because women weren't allowed in the offices. At Palomar Observatory, she became the first female astronomer despite women being historically barred from observing due to a lack of facilities. She converted a men's restroom by taping a skirt outline to the door. In the 1960s and '70s, her observations of galaxy rotation curves definitively confirmed the existence of dark matter, convincing a once-skeptical scientific community. Rubin was the second woman astronomer elected to the National Academy of Sciences, received numerous honors, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory was named in her honor.
