Markarian’s Chain - Telescope processed image. Named for Benjamin Markarian, who discovered in 1961 that at least seven of these galaxies move through space in a unified direction.

A stunning image of Markarian's Chain, a string of galaxies within the Virgo Cluster. The image, a small section of the "Big Picture" mosaic from the Samuel Oschin Telescope, showcases prominent galaxies M84 and M86, along with several spiral galaxies. The Virgo Cluster, the nearest cluster to our own, is home to over 2,000 galaxies and exerts a significant gravitational influence on the Local Group. This image will soon be featured as a mural at the renovated Griffith Observatory.
