An Eastern tiger swallowtail on a butterfly bush. The bush's flowers are dozens of deep purple flowers leaning into the photo from the right. The swallowtail is mostly yellow with black stripes stretching down from the tops of the wings and a black line across the bottom with small yellow spots at the edge. The background of the photo is blurred.

A dark morph female Eastern tiger swallowtail on wild bergamot. There are several flowers in the picture. The butterfly is on the one in the center, which can barely be seen because of the size of the butterfly. It is facing up. The butterfly is almost all black, except for some beautiful iridescent markings near the bottom of its wings. There are small tails coming off the ends of the wings.

A watercolor painting of an eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly. The colors of the butterfly are accurate: mostly yellow with black striping and body, subtle blues in the hindwings. The wing venation resembles bird feathers.
It is supposed to be a top view of the butterfly in flight, so it flies toward the top-left corner of the watercolor paper.
The piece is divided in half diagonally, where the butterfly takes up the majority of the bottom-right half, and green and brown foliage fills in the top-left half of the painting.

I like what I tried to do with this, but I am no watercolor master so I'll just have to keep pushing myself with it.

A female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail feeding off the nectar provided by the orange blooms of Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa). This butterfly has a wingspan of 5 inches. This butterfly is yellow with black stripes resembling the pattern of a tiger, hence, the common name. Females have a splash of blue on their tails that distinguishes them from males. Males are only yellow and black. A sidebar piece of trivia: Another unusual characteristic for these female butterflies is dimorphic coloring. Females can also be all black mimicking the distasteful Pipevine Swallowtail. We’ll touch base on this mimicry in a future post whenever I encounter one and capture an image! pollinators backyardwildlife bugsky invertebrates

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. If you see that iridescent blue on its tail, you’ve encountered a female! How to support? Plant nectar flowers like thistles, annuals, etc. If you see this 🦋 , one of their host trees is nearby: Ash, Birch, Wild Cherry, Cottonwood, Tulip, & Willow #papilioglaucus

An Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly with its wings spread. It is facing up. The body is black with two black antennae forming a V. The wings are primarily a light yellow with numerous black markings and a little bit of orange and blue. There is a thick black line across the outer edge of the bottom of all of the wings. Almost at the very edge are yellow spots, like dashes, on the forewings. They're a little bigger on the hind wings and curved. At the top of the forewings there are four thick black streaks reaching down from the edge of the wings, each one getting thicker toward the body. On the hindwing there are two thick black streaks matching the length of the butterfly's body, as well as four thin black lines, two of which line up with the innermost streak of the forewing. At the very bottom of the hind wing is an orange circle with a yellow mark in the middle of it and a black spot in the middle of that. It is surrounded by four blue dots. There are two more orange spots below that.

Papilio glaucus or eastern tiger swallowtail. Given the edges of its wing, I'm thinking that this is a male. I only ever see these near woodland areas so coming across one in the yard is always a blessed gift.
