A lighthouse stands on a forested hill at sunset, with the sun just below the horizon to the left. A sailboat is passing by to the right, and there are rolling hills in the distance. The scene is suffused with a soft golden light.

The Penobscot Tower's Beacon (b.1928). Legend has it that it was a port for dirigibles. The fact is that it's an aviation beacon, which glows red, illuminating the foggy skyline at night.

A boatman, his back to the viewer, stands on the shore of a placid bay at twilight. A skiff is drawn up on the shore to his left. A two-masted schooner is at anchor in the bay, and a one-masted ship is in the far distance. A high hill stands across the bay, atop which is the faint silhouette of a small lighthouse, with a red keeper's house downhill. Other small buildings stand on the opposite shore, and there are more hills in the distance.
