The Chapel had recently received the holy relic of Santo Anello – the wedding ring, made of chalcedony, that was purported to be the one given by St. Joseph to the Virgin Mary at the marriage ceremony. (As an aside, the Holy Ring is kept inside its reliquary which in turn is placed inside a safe that requires 14 separate keys in order to open it.) Perugino was the teacher of Raphael, who also painted this same scene in a similar manner. One comic touch that both artists used was to show a rejected suitor breaking a branch over his knee: Mary’s suitors all brought branches to court her but only Joseph’s miraculously blossomed. Perugino’s painting was looted by Napoleon’s troops in 1797 and was sent to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen in 1804. It has not been returned to Perugia.

Lo Sposalizio della Vergine è un capolavoro realizzato tra il 1501 e il 1504 dal #Perugino. In origine era collocato nella Cappella del Santo Anello presente nel Duomo di Perugia. Nel 1797 fu fatto prendere da Napoleone e portato in Francia. Oggi si trova presso il Muséé des Beaux-Arts di Caen.
