Superficially, it seems that world #religions and #philosophies are very different from each other.

But if you penetrate behind the imagery, you will find the same treasures of wisdom.

#Comparing #religions with each other is therefore an enharing and #encouraging #study.

It gives me pause. Further, most of these #philosophies are by #Men & that also gives me pause.🤔2

0s add up. The weight of "nothingness" can measure up to a lot and feel heavy and burdensome just as much as anything else; if not everything else, on top of it all.

We cannot overcome the external challenges the world throws at us if we do not first master our own mind.

Ahhhh, the "mens magazine with a ridiculous name". I've learned to ignore it. Hell, the other morning it occurred to me to start an alt-right boobs magazine and call it something completely objectionable like "Casual Date Rape Weekly" and see if it would gain traction as the new mob moves into DC? I think we've established that there is no moral floor to America anymore.

But seriously...I grew up with a clear moral shorthand. Would it cause my mother to wash my mouth out with soap? I distinctly (to this day) remember when an older kid told me a dirty joke with the punchline "rubber balls and liquor" and I blindly repeated it to my mother. She was my usual audience for whatever ridiculous imaginary world I'd concocted that day so it seemed natural to try this new thing out on her. The sky was blue but her face was very very cloudy as the punchline sank in. We were standing in the side yard by the plum tree which meant that there was that much further to be hauled along as we headed for the bathroom and a solid lesson in what was publicly acceptable.

A few years later, as a paperboy, we all got to know who kept beer and girly mags in their garages. Fun fact: we also sold dope to your wives while you weren't home. What do you think they did all day? Anyway, the beer was usually shitty (although to be fair there wasn't much else back then...Lowenbraugh was considered a high end import) and the magazines were usually Playboy but sometimes Penthouse or Hustler. Every once in a while somebody would score some biker mag with trashy-looking gals leg-up on a Harley. They had tattoos. It was totally shocking. I think, though, that girly mags dropped out of my world in 7th grade or so. I discovered MUSIC and punk rock, in particular, and my allowance couldn't keep up with that. And we had real girls to daydream about. Magazines weren't as real as kissing Lisa from the apartments and realizing that she smoked. I didn't hate it.

Where was I? Oh yes. Why are they called either "girly" mags or "mens" magazines? Something about a power dynamic imbalance, isn't there?

So when I went on this big foray this past year to get published, the easy target were these online print-on-demand magazines. To date I am something like 34-2 and have taken some perverse delight in submitting grainy BnW to fancy fashion mags or grittily-surreal work plopped into something that usually features heavy makeup in shades of Vogue. They all operate on a pay-to-play basis but I've pulled the "you'll be looked at last if you don't give us $5" lever each time and if these were slot machines I'd be rich.

Quick side note: I don't flatter myself that I'm winning on talent. I think these outlets need an insane amount of content to publish each month AND I happen to be working with wonderful models who make me look good. This is just falling forward.

Anyway. I'm a West Coast liberal with delusions of upward mobility. It pains me to submit to a magazine with a title like "LOOKER" or "HUNTER". "L'Desir" is at least French. And I have conversations with myself about boobs on the internet and feminism and blah blah blah. Semi-sidebar: a couple years back I gave myself a birthday present and subscribed to an "online magazine" that featured over a thousand photographers who had submitted (although the "editor" was always the featured photog - lame ego trip) and I knew a bunch of the models in their archive. Best $20 I ever spent. I try to hold myself to SOME kind of standard. I would put my archive up against all but one or two of the photographers who had posted work and I am going to say that I am objectively better in my craft. From Day One. Page after page of "nude study in hotel room" with a Starbucks cup forgotten in one corner of the frame. "Bend over and grab your ankles, sweetie, we're gonna artistically portray your butthole!"

At the end of the day I want to be proud of what I've created.

Submitting to magazines has been a really valuable bit of growth. How do you put together a storyline? What's the arc of this shoot? Does it benefit from re-arranging? Is it a striptease or some kind of epic journey? It made me look at photography a bit differently and imagine how things would pair. It made me want to start my own magazine because I can do it better than 3/4's of these yahoos.

Like any good idea this one has been percolating for a bit and I'm not going to go into it here because I was talking about something else. But it's brewing. It's brewing.

None of these images are the ones that LOOKER chose for my little piece of their new issue but the blankness of the title page seemed to call out for dropping a horizontal image in and then I needed to say more so here are some more shots of the very beautiful, funny and fun Joey Darke. I'd like to think that the work we did together here says something about how both of us view ourselves and the world. It's not supposed to be titillating although just saying that word makes me giggle and mutter "boobs" under my breath like I'm 12 again. Maybe that's the thing. If some kid finds this magazine in the dumpster behind the barbershop maybe they'll pass this around and get wide-eyed at the gal with tattoos disappearing into her boots. But maybe one of them will look at a beautiful woman rendered with care and think "that's what I want" and add care and respect to their erotic qualities. In an era where porn seems like an endless procession of choke outs and degradation it can't hurt to throw in some respectful erotica. If we don't illustrate it, who will ever see it?

The magazine sent me a blank cover page and I question their layout. So I made my own. Sorry/not sorry. Longer ramble (much much longer) in alt-text. #modelshoot #makemyown #noblankspace #mensmags #girlymags #philosophies #longwinded

AI Overview

"Poetics of resonance" is an aesthetic practice that uses imagination to appreciate the human experience. It can also refer to the use of resonance as a heuristic tool to study cultural and literary history.

Here are some examples of "poetics of resonance":

Simone Toji's PhD thesis
Toji's thesis uses "poetics of resonance" to describe an aesthetic operation that uses imagination to appreciate the human experience. Toji also uses the term to describe an ethnographic approach that uses empathy and imagination to capture the complexity of lives she studied in São Paulo.

Rūta Šlapkauskaitė's article
Šlapkauskaitė's article, "The Poetics of Resonance in Frances Itani's Deafening," explores themes such as post-memory, body memory, and the Great War.

Bernstein's echopoetics
Bernstein coined the term "echopoetics" to describe the poetics of resonance.

Promising direction for a book!

". . . ideas of nothingness . . ., where these meet btw Western & non-Western #philosophies, & the potential of #sound aesthetics / a poetics of #resonance to address/express the unknowable nature of God/the 'between'."
