Female mallards, or hens, are more subtly colored, with mottled brown plumage, a darker crown, and an orange bill with dark markings. Both genders have a distinctive iridescent blue speculum bordered by white on their wings.

It's a me! Watching herons on the water at Colonel Samuel Smith Park, actually. Canon camera at the ready. Hybrid bicycle nearby at my side. A small collage of Night Herons, adult and juvenile, a blue jay, and one of those gold crowned kinglets. Swapped my helmet for my hat because of the bright sun. Yes terminal beard is long and white, and has been in existence for at least a decade.
Can confirm , am not professional - professionals get paid, I've never been paid for any of my photography as of yet. I would like to, but it hasn't happened.
Am just another bloke with camera at this point.

The word "quiscula" comes from the specific name Gracula quiscula, which was coined by Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 to describe the common grackle. As predators, Grackles help provide pest control services to the environment by consuming insects like mosquitoes, black flies, and ants. Their most substantial role in the ecosystem lies within their droppings. Grackles are in the Icteridae, or blackbird family, which includes orioles and cowbirds. Crows are corvids, more closely related to jays and magpies.

A green heron leaps headfirst off a log and into the water below to capture a fish for dinner. Afterwards he successfully swallowed the fish, then as two dragonflies passed he snapped out and snared them as well to chase the fish down. This particular little heron was quite very hungry that day and very active all afternoon.

The Black Swallowtail is a medium to large butterfly with a wingspan of about 3 to 4 inches (7-10 cm). Sexual dimorphism is evident, as males and females exhibit different color patterns. Male Black Swallowtail: Males display more vibrant colors with a predominately black upper side of wings.

The Dekay's brownsnake (Storeria dekayi) is brown, light brown or grey. It always has two parallel rows of small dark spots bordering a faint, wide stripe down the back. On some brownsnakes, these parallel spots may appear connected. These are a small non-venomous species of snake in the family Colubridae. The species is native to North America and Central America.
