On a rocky seaside slope covered with crisp brown fallen leaves, a mossy forest of Doug and Grand Fir, flowering currants, Garry Oaks and Arbutus trees converge in the mist. An unusually huge veteran Arbutus is sheltered from the full force of the summit's gales by the rocky ridge. It is the focus of this photo. Its base, on the bottom left of the photo, is broad with the 5 trunks arising from the ground in a circle, the sign of lignotuber regrowth. The bottom of each trunk is covered with the checkered bark characteristic of the base of Arbutus trunks; as the trunk rises the bark changes until it is peeling, then smooth with the eerie texture of human skin (but greeny-beige). The 5 trunks arch out, countering the lean of the slope to create a full green canopy above the clearing. The Arbutus is very healthy, showing none of the snow dead twigs or stem cankers so common in south island Arbutus trees. One large branch has fallen to the ground but has been moved to rest in the circle of trunks.

This Arbutus menziesii is one tree with 5 trunks regrowing from a lignotuber after a long-ago fire. The biggest trunks are as wide around as I can reach. On the west side of PKOLS a bit below the summit: a huge and peaceful tree with pleasing moss tufts.

Climbed #pkols, ate Pirate Paks, and went to the beach. A very #yyj day with kids. On the first day of March, no less. Living here really is incredible. #victoriabc #vancouverisland

Had the happiest of walks with my gal this morning as it snowed up #MtDoug #Pkols - it rained for a bit and now the sun is out. Fingers crossed for more snow.

One of my favorite things about living here is that I live in a city and can be at the top of #PKOLS in 30 minutes. Looking out over the beauty of this ocean and these islands that have remained through the eras of humanity always settles my soul. #yyj #gulfislands #perspective #vancouverisland

Many mosses intertwine in a tapestry of greens on a mountain rockface. Some are dark green tufts, some long and cascading strands of pale green, some feathered pale greeny yellow, some green and linear like arrow fletching. The overall impression is of fresh verdant life.

No disrespect meant, but I'm so confused. Is it Mt Doug or is it Mt Tolmie that's traditionally named #PKOLS (Pkaals, p'q'als)? @Taiaiake
