It has black legs and bill, and a sharp black spur on its wing. Females are slightly larger. This lapwing is commonly found from Kenya through central Tanzania to southern and southwestern Africa, favouring wetlands, grasslands, and even small damp areas. Blacksmith lapwings are territorial, especially during breeding, and aggressively defend their young using their wing spurs. They feed on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Their call is a repeated metallic "tink, tink, tink", from which they get their name.
