🌎 Southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) The Southern lapwing is a striking crested wader with a greyish-brown back and head, black and white face markings, and a black breast band. It has a thin black crest and pinkish legs. Found throughout most of South America, and recently extended its range into southern Central America, it favors open grasslands and wetlands. Known for its loud, piercing calls, it's a territorial bird, aggressively defending its nest and young. Red wing spurs are used for this purpose. Four subspecies are recognised.
