Our imposing almost 30 metres tall black #poplars are actually quite rare. They are between 30-50 years old & could live up to 200 years. Black poplars are dioecious. Ours are all male. From England’s surviving 7000 wild black poplars, only 600 are females. The wood is naturally fire resistant.
Elegiac poplars are mourners
at the field’s edge,
heads bowed to the wind.
Trunks lean, listening
for a voice lost in grasses,
while leaves flicker laments,
trembling and brittle,
scattering shadows
