Discovery of a bacterium that protects against long Covid
Peer-Reviewed Publication
Université catholique de Louvain

FacebookXLinkedInWeChatBlueskyMessageWhatsAppEmail
According to WHO, approximately 6% of the worldwide population who contract Covid-19 – some 400 million people – go on to develop a long-lasting form of the disease. These figures demonstrate that the persistent form of the disease remains a problem and is a major public health challenge.

In 2021, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, University of Louvain (UCLouvain, Belgium) and its hospital, the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, launched a large-scale study to determine whether it is possible to predict, during the acute phase of infection, the development of long-term symptoms. The ultimate goal is to better understand the underlying mechanisms and, potentially, develop a preventive therapeutic solution.

After five years of research, scientists have discovered the key role played by a bacterium, Dolosigranulum pigrum, that is naturally present in the respiratory microbiome. When present in greater numbers, these bacteria are associated with a reduction in the persistence of symptoms characteristic of long Covid.

Mass General Brigham study results signal a call to do further research into the connection between vitamin D supplementation and long COVID

In a large, randomized trial, researchers at Mass General Brigham have found that high-dose vitamin D3 did not reduce COVID-19 infection severity, but may impact long COVID outcomes. Results of the study are published in The Journal of Nutrition.

“There’s been tremendous interest in whether vitamin D supplements can be of benefit in COVID, and this is one of the largest and most rigorous randomized trials on the subject,” said senior author JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, of the Mass General Brigham Department of Medicine. “While we didn’t find that high-dose vitamin D reduced COVID severity or hospitalizations, we observed a promising signal for long COVID that merits additional research.”

Long COVID Awareness Month logo

Long COVID Awareness Month is a time for everyone impacted by Long COVID to come together globally in coordinated awareness and action.

This effort will highlight the urgent need for prevention, research, funding, and long-term care for people suffering with Long COVID. Hundreds of millions worldwide continue to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, and many are still developing Long COVID. The World Health Organization estimates 10–20% of those infected experience prolonged symptoms.

COVID-19 Longhauler Advocacy Project (C19LAP) has created a calendar of events to particpate, with many activities you can do from home.

AURORA, Colo. (Jan. 29, 2026) – Scientists have identified molecular and structural changes in taste buds that may explain why a small subset of people experience long-term taste loss after COVID-19 infection.

The study, published last month in Chemical Senses, provides the first direct evidence linking patients’ reported taste changes to measurable biological abnormalities inside taste cells.

What causes long-term taste loss after COVID-19?

Researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz and two Swedish universities studied 28 non-hospitalized patients who reported persistent taste disturbances more than one year after contracting COVID-19.
