Mineral Hills Abandoned Rock Quarry in Northampton, Massachusetts Tucked at the very end of a residential street in Northampton, MA, is the unassuming entrance to the Mineral Hills Conservation Area, a free network of hiking trails. Entering the forest area, which is maintained by the Friends of the Mineral Hills and monitored by the Kestrel Land Trust, one is unlikely to realize at first that they are just a brief walk from a large abandoned rock quarry. The quarry operated from the 1950s until the early 2000s when a stop-work order was issued due alleged zoning violations. In 2007, the land that includes the quarry transferred to the City of Northampton’s Conservation Commission. The conservation funds were raised by local groups and individuals from nearby neighborhoods committed to protecting the land. Now, atop the rock quarry’s ledge, visitors can have a look down into evidence of human industry now returning to its natural habitat. Bring binoculars to try to spot frogs, birds, and other critters who have made their home in this protected former gravel mining site.

• A new study has found that after the 2016 ban on river sand mining in Kerala, stone quarries have expanded near protected areas in the Western Ghats to extract stone for M-sand production.

• The researchers found that some quarries expanded five to tenfold or more during 2011 to 2021. About 17% of this increase took place in 2016.

• Besides causing loss of biodiverse habitat, quarrying activity involves loud noises, dust, ground-shaking blasts which could potentially harm the region’s wildlife.

• The study recommends that ecologically sensitive zones be designated strictly off-limits for new quarry approvals.

Mount Judd in Nuneaton, England Mount Judd is a local landmark in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England. It is visible from miles around, particularly from the North of the town and, notably, from the busy A5. The artificial hill is also known as the "Nuneaton Nipple" - this nickname might be due to the shape of the mound, or it might have originated as a derogatory name thought up by the resident of nearby Bedworth who are known to be competitive with the people of Nuneaton. The hill originated as a spoil tip for the Judkins granite quarry. After the quarry closed, the "mountain" formed by its waste product was measured as the 3,306th highest peak in England at a height of 518 feet. Although on private land, a trip to the summit was, for many years, a rite of passage for the youths of Nuneaton. Over the years, numerous objects have been left at the summit including, in 2017, half a Mini Cooper. The area has since been fenced off to prevent such activities. The Mount has also been the subject of numerous April Fools Day pranks, including press announcements that it was to be removed (causing intense objections in the town) and reports that a ski lift was to be installed. When traveling south on the A5, residents of Nuneaton and nearby Hinckley fondly consider that seeing the "mountain" is an indication that they are just about home. Adding to its renown, Mount Judd was voted the United Kingdom's best landmark in a May 2018 poll by the Daily Mirror, beating competition from the likes of the Angel of the North, Giants Causeway, and Big Ben. A few weeks afterwards, the Daily Mirror reopened the vote, saying that the newspaper simply could not accept that a spoil heap should be recognized in this way. However, Mount Judd still proudly holds its original title.

Thousand Steps in Mapleton, Pennsylvania Located along Route 22 is an opportunity to step into the past and see some of the most amazing views in Pennsylvania. One of the most famous hikes in the state, the Thousand Steps is .5 mile section of the larger Standing Stone Trail with an elevation gain of around 850 feet. Beyond the incredible views that await at the top, the steps are also an important piece of Pennsylvania's history. Beginning at the turn of the 20th century, the nearby town of Mount Union became known as the “Silica Brick Capital of the World" - mined from the local stone, silica is a heat-resistant material that was crucial in the steel and railroad industries. The steps were carved into mountain in 1936 by workers of the Harbison-Walker refractory, in order to facilitate their access to the Ledge Quarry at the top of the mountain. Silica use declined in the 1950s, and the steps eventually fell into disuse. In the 1990s, public access to the steps and its surrounding area was threatened, so a group came together to protect it - the Save Our Steps Committee managed to preserve the steps and 669 nearby acres, allowing for the hiking trail and its history to remain for future generations. And remember, when you reach step number 1,000, don't start celebrating, since you'll have a bit more left to climb - the steps in total are actually 1,043!

Santa Ponsa Quarry in Alaior, Spain This quarry was actively used from the 19th century until 1970, supplying limestone for the rest of the island. For the most part, workers completed the job without the aid of electricity. Now abandoned, the quarry has been preserved for its cultural significance. Today, it stands like a man-made canyon, where rugged rock faces coexist with the encroaching natural landscape.

A black and white photograph in portrait format. It shows an outbuilding made of corrugated iron on a quarry site, now closed. On the door is a "Danger High Voltage Keep Out" sign. The rust signals the lack of care and of time passing. I am drawn to the beauty of old industrial buildings, and I still find them alluring.

A black and white photograph in portrait format. Almost a portrait of a face in profile in the rock, hope that you can make it out. This very large stone sits on the woodland floor and looks to me like a sleeping face with closed eyes. Maybe just me? It is surrounded by spindly trees and leaf litter.

High drone view of the whole manganese quarry, with repeated large piles of large stone blocks. It's unclear whether this was waste stacked neatly to avoid the trackway, or stone destined for processing later on. Some spoil heaps exist on the other side of the track. A dispute, common in extractive efforts, is one possible explanation as to why there are no more spoil heaps.

Closer drone view of some of the piles of stones.

I've seen many manganese quarries and mines, but never one quite like this. The narrow vein must have been chased on the surface. Were the piles of stones waste?

The landscape is almost all sandstone and mudstone, about half a billion years old.
