We've been reflecting on a brilliant week at the @royalstatsoc.bsky.social International Conference in Edinburgh. Thanks for all the excellent sessions and discussions. π

Most pertinent to #HEI and research, he stressed the importance of playfulness in approaching a topic and the opportunities to learn and develop through that process.
This is where different inspirations for me meet:
"Play important things"

#AcademicChatter #RSS2025
... having someone tell a story about story telling brings in other aspects.
Conceptualising visualisation as a form of data compression was an interesting thought to me.
Also, he sees his work much more like photo journalism than print journalism: #DataViz is about perspective, zoom...
#RSS2025
I really enjoyed the #DataViz talk by @infobeautiful.bsky.social at @rssedinburgh.bsky.social. Not because the content was new. His talks (www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zg-...) and books have made the point that the stories lie in contrasting relevant numbers in visually appealing ways.

But...
We're incredibly proud of our Samuel Connolly and Tess Vernon for winning 1st prize(!) for best poster at the @royalstatsoc.bsky.social International Conference! π π

960+ people. 4 days. 1 unforgettable conference. Thanks to everyone who made #RSS2025 such a standout event!
Our president John Aston shares some reflections, including a timely reminder that transparency is key to trust in official stats π rss.org.uk/news-publica...
A book leaning upright on a wooden bench or seat of sorts, sunshine broken up by shades (leaves?) above. In the background some green and flowers are vaguely visible. The top of a "Royal Statistical Society" conference name tag sticks out of it. The book's cover is largely black, sports the title "Bayesian Meta-Analysis - A practical introduction" by Robert Grant and Gian Luca Di Tanna. The lower half shows a picture with a beige background on top of which there are what looks like line or ink lines indicating a wild overlay of continuous distribution curves, close to symmetric but with a bit of positive skew. It is identified as a work in acrylic and coffee on card by Robert Grant
Busy week, not much posted from #RSS2025.
I enjoyed chatting w @rlgrant.bsky.social and am reading his coauthored "Bayesian #MetaAnalysis" which he gave me a copy of π

The poster sessions at #RSS2025 this week have been very engaging and informative. It was a great opportunity to speak with accomplished colleagues from prestigious organisations around the world about the successful projects they have been delivering recently. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
Many of the keynote speeches at #RSS2025 have been very insightful to over 900 attendees, from over 50 countries. Claire Miller, from @uofglasgow.bsky.social talked about working with @glasgowcitycouncil.bsky.social to transform Glasgow into a climate resilient city. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...
Thoroughly enjoyed Maria Christodoulou's presentation on how to engage non-statisticians in statistics at #RSS2025. I want more classes involving zombies! #statistics #teaching
It's the final day of the @royalstatsoc.bsky.social International Conference in #Edinburgh, and we're contributing to two more sessions today.
Both sessions are covering different aspects of the responsible use of #AI. π¨βπ»

Our very own Cristina Magder, the Data Collections Development Manager for the @ukdataservice.bsky.social and Julia Kasmire, a Research Fellow for the @ukdataservice.bsky.social, have shared their views at #RSS2025 about enabling better access to data, including sharing data for secondary use.
During her talk at #RSS2025, @christldonnelly.bsky.social, from @ox.ac.uk, shared powerful quotes from high profile experts who champion the sharing of research in the world of data science to build on trust and integrity - including Professor Chris Witty, the Chief Medical Officer for England.
Sharing our thoughts on how to support the development of communication skills in early career statisticians at #RSS2025 in Edinburgh yesterday. Absolute pleasure to connect with statisticians at this conference. @mischhub.bsky.social #statistics #communication #mentoring
