Really happy we, @koberauer.bsky.social & Ricardo Rebmann & I, could finally put all the pieces together with the right framing.
The take home message: better #Psychometrics methods and models won't fix this. We need explicit theories of how cognition produces behavior. 3/3
This is really great news and is for an excellent paper that I highly recommend reading!
Working myself in an area that has at best non-standard measurement units (at worst, some people would argue, it's not #measurement at all), I found this paper very interesting.

3/ Without this clarity, scales look psychometrically sound but remain theoretically underdetermined.
We measure something, but what does score variation represent?
This also determines scale anchors and whether reverse-worded items even belong in your measure.

“One of the first scales to estimate wind speeds and the effects was created by Britain's Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). He developed the scale in 1805 to help sailors estimate the winds via visual observations. The scale starts with 0 and goes to a force of 12. The Beaufort scale is still used today to estimate wind strengths.” “19-24mph - Fresh Breeze - Moderate waves, taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed. Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters.” “32-38mph - Near Gale - Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown in streaks along the direction of the wind. Whole trees in motion; inconvenience felt when walking against the wind.” “39-46 mph - Gale - …generally impedes progress.”
Beaufort’s Wind Scale makes me want to add Likert levels.

- DIF analysis
Couched as a preliminary investigation and pilot study, the analytic approach still sets a bar reached rarely by studies with such data.

Screenshot of text and a table. Chen et al., “The most common patient-centred outcomes were quality of life, satisfaction or patient experience, self-management or self-care, depression or mental health, physical function or exercise capacity, cost-effectiveness, cognitive function, adherence, empowerment and hospitalisations.” The table then presents the outcomes from the core outcome sets and the number of studies in Chen et al. (2026) that report this outcome (max. n=25) (Health-related) Quality of Life 9 Mental Health 4 Mortality Adverse Events 1 Development of New Comorbidity 0 Health-risk Behaviour 0 Adherence to Treatment 2 Health-care Cost (out of pocket) 4 Number of studies based on those reported in Chen et al. (Tables 2 & 3), so it may be that some of the less usual outcomes such as health-care cost were not extracted by the team of the systematic review. On the other hand, “cost” is coded inclusively as not all studies assessed out-of-pocket cost (not relevant in all health care systems). The table also codes which outcomes are drawn from which core outcome set, which was unfortunately difficult to describe - here are the references to the sets: 1 Smith et al. (2018). Having seen many (and done some) of these proof-of-concept studies myself, let's me wonder:
Are there still too few well-developed systems available?
Maybe someone reads this and feels we can get a collection of these together so that others can read up on them?
