The flowers are drooping and starting to fade. In the middle, a wilted opium poppy has been cut off. The empty space left there lends depth to the bouquet." A detail of a painting by Rachel Ruysch, a 17th century dutch painter who intensely studied the natural world. This detail shows a butterfly (black wings with bands of orange and white spots) and a small bluish lizard in the foreground, with a stack of peaches, a chestnut, grapes, a pear and leaves in the background. The lizard looks either playful or alarmed at the butterfly, but I don't know much about lizards, so maybe she's just hungry.
If you're in the Boston/New England area, I highly recommend the Rachel Ruysch exhibition going on at the Museum of Fine Arts.
It feels like magic, and also has specimens from @harvard alongside her work.

A glorious profusion of flowers sitting on a stone ledge, in the right edge of which is the artist's signature. According to the text on the museum object page, "Luscious white and orange lilies, peonies, cabbage roses, and striated tulips compete for attention in a sumptuous display. Glistening dewdrops on the petals suggest that the blossoms are freshly cut. Indeed, their scent continues to attract hovering insects."
