España, 1896) Ramon Casas Museo: Cercle del Liceu, Barcelona (España) El artista Ramon Casas (España, 1866–1932) fue uno de los máximos exponentes del Modernismo catalán en las disciplinas de la pintura, el dibujo y el cartel. Siendo muy joven (15 años) consiguió continuar sus estudios de arte en París. Allí se descubrió su brillantez. Su Autorretrato (1883) pintado con solo diecisiete años fue lo que le definió como artista. La escena plástica Baile de tarde nos transmite su pasión por plasmar grupos de personas y costumbres. Esta acción está captada en su ciudad natal, Barcelona se supone que el lugar donde se refleja la escena es el propio patio del taller de Casas. Es sabido que allí se organizaban eventos culturales y reuniones de artistas, aunque en este caso nos encontremos ante una escena festiva y desenfadada de la alta burguesía a media tarde. La luz que se filtra en el toldo ocre crea una atmosfera cálida parecida a los atardeceres luminosos de los que se apoderó el artista en su viaje a Granada. La destreza que Ramon Casas demostraba con el pincel elaboró que Baile de tarde fuese un abanico lleno de detalles y le diese a cada personaje su propia narrativa: los gestos de cada personaje le confieren un estado de ánimo diferente. El hombre de negro sentado en primer término, acompañado de una figura femenina, muestra un abatimiento que resalta en la armonía del resto de la composición.

Ramón Casas y Pere Romeu en tándem La publicidad de la Cataluña modernista. Ramón Casas España, 1897 Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, Barcelona (España) Divertido ejemplo del modernismo catalán. #ramoncasas lo pintó para decorar una de las paredes de la cervecería “Els Quatre Gats”, el bar de su amigo Pere Romeu, que acabaría convirtiéndose en el cuartel general de la vanguardia artística de la ciudad. El mismísimo #picasso organizó ahí su primera exposición. Intelectuales, literatos y demás cráneos privilegiados realizaron legendarias tertulias bajo este cuadro (en realidad fueron legendarias borracheras). La obra intenta imitar los carteles publicitarios de la época, haciendo uso de una ironía propia del pop-art, y por su técnica libre y síntesis en el paisaje puede recordar a artistas como Toulouse-Lautrec. Un par de años después, Casas haría otra versión más moderna, con los mismos personajes, pero esta vez en un moderno automóvil .

In Spanish artist Ramon Casas’s extensive catalogue, female portraits are particularly common and represent the essence of his activity. In the painter’s hands, this kind of portrait took on an essentially sensual and decorative aspect, since the models were almost always depicted in vaguely suggestive and provocative poses. One of his favourite models was Julia Peraire, a beautiful lottery ticket vendor in the Plaza de Cataluña. When Casas met her at a gathering at the Maison Dorée, he was dazzled by the freshness and beauty of her youth – she was twenty-five years younger than him. After living together for several years, they married on September 29, 1922. Casas portrayed his lover in the most varied of poses and attires. The results were generally very attractive in spite of their conventional style, although with great intuition the artist made up for their apparent lack of expressiveness with that special sensitivity he always displayed in his use of color and his ability to reflect unassumingly but clearly the slightest hint of a woman’s suggestiveness. This was the key to his outstanding success in this genre and a feature he repeated over and over again in the last years of his life. In this portrait, Julia is seated, hands on hips, in a traditionally popular and almost defiant attitude, dressed in the most typical Spanish costume: a bright red matador jacket embroidered in black over a waistcoat with silver threads, in perfect harmony with the color of the dress, the comb and the flowers in her hair. Casas’ use of the reds and blacks that offset the pearly whiteness of the model’s complexion, with her soft delicate traits, the almost metallic coldness of the dress and the neutral background, achieved by rubbing the paint on the canvas. The artist added a clearly erotic message in the depiction of his model’s bare neck and generous décolletage, with her steady, slightly haughty gaze directed at the onlooker and the red of her lipstick.
