A small gray bird with a rich cinnamon brown belly is perched on a branch. This is a Red-breasted Nuthatch, one of two nuthatch species found in the Adirondack Park. It is most frequently seen in conifer forests or mixed woodland with a strong coniferous component, in contrast to our other nuthatch – the slightly larger White-breasted Nuthatch, which prefers deciduous forests.

A red breasted nut hatch pauses on a birdfeeder. This is a tiny bird with a black upper beak, and the lower beak, partially black fading into gray above its white chin. The head is white with a black stripe going through its black eye, and a black stripe starting at its upper beak and going over the center of its head. The birds back and wing feathers are a powder blue. Its breast is a rusty yellow.

I’ve been missing the pheasants that visit our yard. They were absent the last six months, or so. I was out in the back yard and spotted these tracks in the snow. The huge feet and the drag marks from the pheasants tail are a give away. No other bird in our area leaves these kind of signs. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get a photo of the actual bird in the near future.

Telephoto of a Nuthatch feeding from our suet feeders we have in the front yard. It’s a Red-breasted Nuthatch. He’s hanging upside down on the side of the suet cake cage. It’s a small bird that appears to have no neck and short tail. It has a black crown on it’s head and black and white eye lines. The back of the bird is a blue/grey colour with a reddish/cinnamon coloured belly and white throat. I’m thinking it’s a male, but the males and females are similar. The females tend to have duller colouring though.

To lighten the mood, here are a couple pictures.

1. From today. Pheasant tracks in our back yard. The tail drags are the giveaway. Yes! haven’t seen a sign of one in months.

2. Telephoto shot of a Nuthatch on our suet feeder from a couple days ago.

A Red-breasted Nuthatch clings sideways to the end of a dead pine branch, its compact body set against a soft, green-gray blur of pine forest. The slate-blue back contrasts with its warm, rusty-red breast and flanks, while a bold black eye stripe cuts across the pale face. Its sharp, slightly upturned bill points outward, caught in a brief pause before the bird returned to probing the soft wood for insects.
