Lunch time walk through the Reed College Canyon. I’m lucky to live and work just a few blocks from this absolute natural space well within the city limits of Portland, just a few miles from downtown. I try to get over here for a walk once a day.

Thrilled to Announce by C.E. McKenna | Hippocampus Magazine "There she is: white girl drunk on the dance floor of the Reed student union" -- from the essay "Thrilled to Announce" by C.E. McKenna in the Nov-Dec 2025 issue.

Once upon a time, a #womensrugby player at @reed.edu had a bad one-night-stand with a scruffy blond ascetic.

Eighteen years later, she wonders if she should post about it on #linkedin

Reed College fires community safety director who shared alumnus’ phone, address with FBI Gary Granger, who had worked as the college’s community safety director for a little over 15 years, accused the college of bowing to “political” pressure from wealthy alumni donors.

@reed.edu www.oregonlive.com/crime/2025/0... You messed up. Heavily supported with federal funding in student aid and research programs, #ReedCollege should have at least offered fired Director of Community Safety due process. Publicly funded colleges need to support law and order, not VIOLENCE.

@reed.edu #ReedCollege, a mid-level (ranks 63 out of 207 Liberal Arts Colleges), highly federal fund dependent private college can ill afford to thumb its nose at assisting law enforcement in the apprehension of VIOLENT felons simply because they are alumni. www.oregonlive.com/crime/2025/0...

@reed.edu #ReedCollege President #AudreyBilger unfairly fired the Director of Community (campus) Safety, a 15 year loyal and effective employee, for assisting the FBI in apprehending a VIOLENT alumni who smashed a rock into the head of an ICE agent. Does Reed value VIOLENCE over LAW and ORDER?

2 1 0 0

#ReedCollege Director of Community Safety broke no laws nor violate any policies. All he did was what he'd done countless times before to protect the community: cooperate with law enforcement. Why has #AudreyBilger sided with a VIOLENT ANTIFA alum over a 15 year safety veteran doing his job?

2 0 0 0

#ReedCollege should do a little self examination: Why is Audrey Bilger supporting a violent ANTIFA alum over a 15 year campus Community Safety veteran? Said director is being fired for doing something he'd done countless times before in order to protect Reed's community: cooperate w/law enforcement.

Not only that, #ReedCollege chose a violent alumni over a 15 year veteran of campus Community Safety. The Director is being fired as of tomorrow; no due process, no severance, for doing something he had done countless times before: protect campus safety by cooperating with law enforcement officials.

Y tu, #ReedCollege (my alma matter)? President Audrey Bilger sent this to alumni re charged alumnus: "Reed College’s Director of Community Safety recently disclosed information about this alumnus to federal law enforcement, apparently without a subpoena or warrant..." Makes nothingburger pledge.

In the 1980s, National Review founder William F. Buckley waved a copy of the #ReedCollege student handbook on national TV and frothed about excesses of drugs and sex in liberal academia. But now NatReview has hit a new high point.

African-American artist, dancer, and educator Thelma Beatrice Johnson Streat's work was powerful, both in line and color. She was the first first Black woman artist to have a painting included in New York’s Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. Streat studied art briefly at Reed College in Portland in the 1940s, and she subsequently donated this painting that is widely considered to be her greatest work — The Black Virgin.

Born in Yakima, Washington and raised in Portland, Oregon, Streat packed a whirlwind career into her short life. She was a dancer, singer, and painter as well as a textile artist. She worked with Mexican muralist Diego Rivera on his “Pan American Unity” mural for the federal Works Progress Administration in San Francisco in 1939, and her own WPA mural “Medicine and Transportation” resides in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture.

In this painting, she reportedly depicts herself as a “Black Virgin Mary” all in white. The gaze of the Virgin draws our attention and holds it. Her eyes are averted to the side, looking back at us with an intensity that feels quite earnest. Because her face is to the right of center, when her eyes shift left they return our focus to the middle.

The Virgin’s face has a pleasing fullness, yet the shadow cast by it is triangular in contrast to the horizontal plane of her collarbone. Behind each shoulder, there are spots of green, and cartoonish tree branches curve upward toward the sky in a warm brown color that complements the richness of her skin tone.

There is a shine on her nose and lips, and a reflection on her forehead that appears to represent the panes of a window and the practical reality of a studio setting where Streat probably used a mirror to capture her own image.

The contours of her face are outlined by a blue glow that creates unexpected intrigue, and the underside of her veil is purple not white, as if colored by the reflection of that mysterious blue.

Unlike Harvard, my alma mater is small enough to escape Felon's attention for now, but its reputation for godless liberalism is going to catch up to it. When it does, I hope they flip Felon the bird. #reedcollege
