USDA Says It Needs Roads to Fight Remote Wildfires, but a New Study Says Roads Bring More Fire to Forests - Inside Climate News Opponents of the move say the Trump administration’s push to rescind the Roadless Rule is a giveaway to the timber industry that ignores science and will make wildfires worse.

“The more people you put in the woods, the more fires you’re most likely going to have.”

Terrific @insideclimatenews.org story on new study refuting the Trump Admin’s claim that rescinding Roadless Rule will reduce fire risk in national deforests. #roadecology

Temporal variation in hotspots and the effects of climate and landscape on wildlife roadkill along the BR-319: conservation challenges in a high-biodiversity area in the Amazon Roads greatly impact wildlife, with roadkill posing a major threat to many species. In the Amazon, highways cut through biodiversity-rich ecosystems, exposing mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians ...

🛣️What shapes #wildlife roadkill along the BR-319 highway (Manaus ↔ Porto Velho)?
New study shows temporal variations in #climate and surrounding landscape significantly influence roadkill rates.

Osburn’s bridge to nowhere becomes a lifeline for Silver Valley’s elk - High Country News Idaho’s newest wildlife crossing didn’t need to be built. It already existed near Coeur d’Alene.

Wildlife crossings are a valuable tool in efforts to mitigate a small portion of the harm caused by roads, but they're also an expensive undertaking. That's why I love this story out of Idaho of one man who saw life-saving potential in an abandoned bridge: www.hcn.org/issues/57-11...

Gordo deserved better.

Not because of the status of his species, but as an individual.

We know how to make these areas safer for wildlife, just as we know how to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

But we
just
keep

cars.

Have been waiting to see this conservative argument for wildlife crossings — if you want species delisted and returned to state management (in this case presumably grizzly bears), you should want fewer of them killed on highways. #roadecology
