Several feet at the base of each tree has been painted white. The paint has been aligned with the outer edges of the walkways. The bases of trees are darker and of similar colour to the soil. The trees continue into the vanishing point at the center of the screen. The canopy of foliage is dense and deeply in shadow.
I still have no idea why these trees were painted this way, but finding a position where the edges line up with the interlocking brick pathway was very satisfying.
