On the ground in front of him are an open book and a stalk of lily with three blossoms. He cradles the Christ Child in his arms. At the top right of the painting – across from the man and slightly above him – the Madonna hovers, suspended by cherubs. She holds her hands toward the man and child, palms out and fingers pointing down. Portions at least of six more cherubs are visible in the center of the painting above the man’s head, and in the top right corner.
