If you find a #wildanimal that seems injured or alone, caring for it at home is ILLEGAL in #Ontario and can do more harm than good! Contact #Salthaven or a licensed rehabber for help. Find the list of authorized #wildlife rehabilitators here: learningcompass.learnflex.net/Upload/Publi...
A cottontail rabbit being held by a wildlife rehabber wearing teal scrubs and blue gloves. The rabbit is nestled into the chest of the rehabber and has one paw resting on the persons arm. In the bottom left of the photo there is white text that says "Happy World Nature Conservation Day". "Conservation Day" is highlighted by a yellow squiggly line.
A red-tailed hawk perched on a wooden beam covered in green turf. The hawk is facing the camera with its wings spread slightly out. Its chest feathers are puffed outwards. At the top left of the photo there is white text that says "Happy World Nature Conservation Day". "Conservation Day" is highlighted by a yellow squiggly line.
A young Milk Snake is shown resting on a persons wrist and forearm. The person is wearing light blue medical gloves. The snake is cream coloured with reddish brown markings. The snake is resting its head on the persons finger, from the other hand. The snakes head is smaller than the persons finger. At the bottom left of the photo there is white text that says "Happy World Nature Conservation Day". "Conservation Day" is highlighted by a yellow squiggly line.
A small nestling bird is facing towards the camera with its eyes closed. It is resting in the palms of a person wearing blue gloves. Some people serve charcuterie. Our Bat Squad serves live mealworms 🪱🦇 Ontario’s bats are insect-eating machines, helping control mosquito populations. Big thanks to our volunteers for keeping these little night flyers healthy and full.

A small hummingbird with iridescent green and golden feathers rests gently on a Salthaven volunteer's hand. The bird’s eyes are closed, and its delicate beak points forward. The background is softly blurred, keeping the focus on the bird and the hand holding it.
This #hummingbird came in after hitting a window. Though it seemed okay, it later died from shock, a sadly common outcome. Window strikes are a leading cause of bird deaths but are preventable. Learn how to help: www.salthaven.org/s/stories/pr...

This image is a side-by-side comparison of the wings of two Red-tailed Hawks before and after recovery, shown in a four-panel grid. Top and bottom left (BEFORE): The hawk’s wings are visibly damaged and incomplete, with many of the flight feathers missing or broken. The feathers appear patchy, uneven, and frayed, leaving large gaps along the wing edges. The hawk is being gently held by gloved hands for examination. The bottom left hawk is wearing a 'hood' over its head. Top right (AFTER): The hawk’s wings are shown fully feathered and restored, with strong, smooth, and symmetrical flight feathers. The wings now appear full and healthy, ready for flight. Again, the bird is being held carefully for display. Bottom right (AFTER): The hawk's wings show significant feather growth, with only a small section on the wing missing some feathers. The bird is being held carefully, with it's wing out. The word "BEFORE" is overlaid on the two left panels, and "AFTER" is overlaid on the two right panels in bold white text. The lower right corner also features the Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Centre logo.
Two #RedtailedHawks came to #Salthaven with wing injuries. With help from our vet partners, they healed through therapy and time. #Flightfeathers had to regrow before release. B&A photos of their transformation. Recovery takes teamwork, patience, and understanding what makes flight possible.

🐦 Wild About Wildlife 🐦 Episode 16: Birds of Summer
We’re hard at work putting the finishing touches on this month’s episode.
Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll hear.

A young fawn resting on towels enclosed in a carrier. The fawn is facing the camera.
Close up of the fawns face.
This young #fawn was found trapped in a fence and, despite our best efforts, did not survive due to the stress and injuries. In spring, it’s normal for fawns to be alone. If a fawn is quiet and appears healthy, it usually doesn’t need help. Only intervene if it’s injured or in danger. #salthaven
Meet Astra, our newest #WildlifeAmbassador! Join us on Facebook Live this Wednesday, May 28 at 1:45pm to hear her story, learn about #owls, and ask your questions. Head to our Facebook page to watch and learn something new! #salthaven #wildliferehab

Our seasonal #volunteers are back, and we’re so grateful! Spring and summer bring a surge of patients, and we couldn’t do it without their help. From feedings to releases, they’re vital to every step of care. Thank you for your compassion and hard work! #wildliferehab #ontariowildlife #salthaven
For the safety of our patients, #Salthaven does not admit #raccoons due to the risk of distemper. If you find a #raccoon in distress, do not handle it—contact local animal control or see the rehabber list in our bio. Please vaccinate your pets for distemper. #wildliferehab #ldnont #strathroyontario
Before bringing wildlife to #Salthaven, please call to make an appointment. This ensures proper care, resources, and guidance. With 60+ calls daily, our small team works hard to respond. If we can’t pick up, leave a message, and we’ll call back. Reach us at 519-264-2440! 🐿️ 🦉#wildliferehab #ldnont
Virginia Rail (a small rust coloured bird with long thin legs and a long beak) standing on sand.
Salthaven staff holding the Virginia Rail to show off its long, slender legs and thin toes.
This secretive Virginia Rail came to us grounded with an injured eye. Found in wetlands, they move easily through cattails with long toes and strong legs. Help us care for unique patients like this by donating today. 💚 www.salthaven.org/make-a-donat...

Found baby bunnies? 🐰 Mom feeds between dusk & dawn—nests are usually not abandoned. Use a blue box to protect nests from pets (remove at dusk). Solo bunnies with fur and upright ears are likely independent. Call #Salthaven at 519-264-2440 if unsure. #wildlife #babybunnies #ontario #wildliferehab
"What difference can I, as one person, make?"
At #Salthaven, we get asked this often — and our answer is always the same: A LOT. 1/3
After a brief pitstop at #Salthaven, this #CommonLoon is off to continue its migration back to its nesting grounds in Northern #Ontario! #wildliferehab #wildlife #loon #ontariowildlife
This beautiful male #WoodDuck, known for his colourful plumage, red eyes, and for nesting in trees, came to #Salthaven with a fractured wing and leg. Despite our best efforts, he didn’t survive. His story is a reminder: if you find injured wildlife, act fast—contact a rehabber. #wildliferehab
🌍 #EarthDay 2025 is just around the corner, and here at #Salthaven, we’re reflecting on how we can further reduce our carbon footprint to make a positive impact on the environment. But it’s not just about what we’re doing—it's about what you can do, too! (1/3)

A Gray Tree frog clinging to a wooden hutch.
🐸 Did you know Ontario has #treefrogs?! This Gray Treefrog was found chilling in someone’s fridge—likely a sneaky stowaway on produce! Now safe at #Salthaven, it’ll stay with us until spring. These frogs change colour to blend in, freeze solid in winter, and are expert climbers. #wildliferehab
