Over on Waiheke Island during Sculpture on the Gulf 2024 and along the winding trail, one is presented with an amazing sculpture of an off-white lighthouse pulling itself out of the ground, its tangled, dark ochre-coloured root system on full display. Most of the tendrils support its body and others are reaching out...for what purpose? Off for a mid-morning stretch and stroll, I reckon. Oliver Stretton, a local artist on the island, was inspired by the lighthouse at Cape Reinga, and thus "Hard Graft" came into being (made of wood, steel, and copper). The sculpture is cleverly placed in a dramatic spot, on a downward slope overlooking the waters of Matiatia Bay. Rangitoto Island is low on the distant horizon - the young volcano wondering what kind of Eldritch horror is out and about.
