“Star sand” is more accurately a biogenic gravel: its grain size is too large to geologically be classified as sand. The sample typically consists of star-shaped Baclogypsina sphaerulata and other shaped forams whose genera I can’t recall at the moment. In the image you can easily see at least four or more different types of foraminifera along with shell and coral fragments.

Sunday/Sanday:: Okinawa’s famous “star sand” is a bit of a misnomer; see the alt text for the reason why.

Photograph my own.

A macro photograph of a sand sample consisting of polished grains of basalt and olivine, shell and coral fragments, and at least one foraminifera. The sample is multi-colored earth tones of white, tan, black, pale green, orange, and translucent grains. Some grains are geologic in origin (basalt and olivine) and some are biogenic (shell, coral, etc.)

Happy #Sandday ! That’s what I’m calling Sundays from now on. This sample is from Hanakāpīʻai Beach on Kauai in Hawaii. This sample had polished grains of basalt and olivine, shell and coral fragments, and at least one foraminifera. Not self-collected. Photograph my own. #geologyrocks #macro

In the picture, a beach with dark sand and some algae can be seen. In the foreground, pale stones cover the surface after the sand. On the right side, part of a harbor can be seen where a forest grows and houses mark the place where the ferry arrives. More boats can be seen in the mid-center of the bay at the left side of the picture.

his #Sunday deserves some #sand and a beach for this #Sandday! Landing on the kingdom of Scáthach, the heroine, on a chilly mid-day.

PS: Visiting the isle of Skye with one of my fav biologists!

A beach is shown on a sunny day. On the left, old Victorian buildings can be seen, as well as the beachfront. In the middle, yellow sand is visible with darker, wet sand resulting from the receding tide. On the rightmost side, the sea is visible, initially a dark yellow where the water covers the beach, and later a darker blue towards the horizon. Hills are visible in the background, as well as clouds that leave a clear blue sky bright between them.
