I'm often sad that MAD Magazine (which was allegedly cancelled back in 2019) STILL manages to be more honest than mainstream journalists when it comes to talking about Trump and his incompetent agents of chaos. #SatireMatters

...President Bush laughed and then *befriended* his SNL impersonator.

Heck, even NIXON went on Laugh In!

Comedy is supposed to "punch up." Be wary when the people who are "up" are afraid of the jokes from below. (4/X)

This is a parody of The Apprentice called "The Oligarch." It appears in the new issue of MAD Magazine.

A silhouetted figure that appears to be Donald Trump asks Jeff Bezos to show what he did for this week's task of redesigning the American flag. Jeff Bezos holds up his modified version of the flag says "I replaced the stripes with duct tape from the roll I used to gag Washington Post journalists."

In the next panel, Elon Musk says "My flag design represents America after my troop of programmers *fix* all of the countries vital systems." The flag resembles a Nazi flag, but instead of showing a swastika in the center circle, it instead has a "404 Error" message.

In the third panel, Trump asks OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to show what he did for this week's task of redesigning the American flag. Altman holds up his flag says "I used AI to create this entirely original design by stitching together many existing flags." Some of the flags he's quilted together include the flag for Canada, the Slytherin house flag, and the logo for the hardcore punk band Black Flag.

In the final panel, Trump says "Well, you all did a great job of selling your souls. Now it's time to see who will be my new favorite oligarch--and who will accidentally fall out of a boardroom window." In the background, Mark Zuckerberg is indeed falling past the boardroom window. If all of this seems like behaviour more in line with Vladimer Putin's Russia, that may be because Trump is literally a puppet being puppeteered by Putin.

The article was written by Matt Cohen and illustrated by Hermann Mejia.

I'm proud to write for a publication that *doesn't* promote Sam Altman as an all-knowing sage. That publication is MAD Magazine. #SatireMatters

As a MAD writer, I may be more prone than most to believe in the importance of satire... but trust me anyway and read this thread from the CEO of The Onion. We need more media outlets to follow suit and speak the truth not just despite the dangers of fascism, but because of it. #SatireMatters

I submitted the first draft of this to MAD Magazine a few days before the Washington Post disgracefully killed @anntelnaes.bsky.social's cartoon about Bezos, Musk, and the other oligarchs. It's sad that MAD has more journalist courage than the Post. #SatireMatters

Musk loves repeating his old bit about comedy being "legal" now... which is weird because comedy was actually legal before but now all of the real comedians are justifiably scared. #SatireMatters

This 2023 MAD Magazine is called "Free Speeches on the Beaches." It was written by Matt Cohen and illustrated by Marc Palm.

The text of the article begins as follows:

When the Verified Speeches
Had checks that were blue
It made the Free Speeches
Want blue check marks too.

Their check envy was weird and their logic was flawed
Since the checks were just there to protect them from fraud

Then one day at the beach there arrived a strange gent
Riding in a green car that he didn’t invent
He said “I’m Elon Musk. Do you crave respect?
Then for just 20 bucks your names will be checked!
No check! New check!
Gold check! Blue check!
All trolls wanting check marks are hereby approved!
Soon 'Elites' will pay me to have theirs removed!”

Despite the fact that he was super rich
Elon’s first day started off with a hitch
His quip that "Comedy is legal again" spurred
An alarming spike in the use of the "N Word."

To make sure no one’s feelings were spared
Elon Musk then loudly declared:
“I do not like when hate speech is suppressed.
Hate speech is free speech which makes it the best.
The meaning of ‘free speech’ from this moment hence is
That you’re free to harass without consequences!
Make slurs against Jews! Make slurs against Blacks!
Make slurs against women – I’ve got you backs!"

"Next go after the gays and then target the trans folks
When your words lead to violence, say ‘It was just jokes.’
Yes you’re free to bully any minority…
But don’t you ever dare to make fun of ME!
For that grave offense I’ll make sure that you’re banned.
What part of ‘free speech’ do you not understand?”

Yet the press called him names like "vain" and "inept"
So Musk left the Free Speeches with nothing except
The lingering smoke from the money he’d burned
And the sad sad sad stench of the lessons unlearned.
Free Speeches still could not see what was clear from the start
That being worth billions does NOT make you smart."

It wasn't always this way. Nixon went on Laugh In. Bush befriended SNL's Dana Carvey.

But this new breed of thin-skinned fascists *fear* being ridiculed. They need to silence the satirists first because making fun of powerful people is the most easily accessible forms of opposition. #SatireMatters

Why I'm quitting the Washington Post Democracy can't function without a free press

You can tell that satire is important because corporations are trying to silence the satirists.

When @anntelnaes.bsky.social spoke out about Bezos and other CEOs groveling at Trump's feet, they killed her cartoon. She quit in protest. (1/X) #SatireMatters
